Success is not always tidy
It can be tempting to tell young people only about the parts of business that went well.
But some of Jai’s most valuable lessons came from the businesses that became stressful, difficult or did not work out as expected.
He learnt that a business can look successful from the outside while having serious problems behind the scenes. He also learnt that making lots of sales does not necessarily mean there is plenty of money left over.
Those lessons were painful at the time, but they now allow him to give much more useful advice to Chayse.

Childhood Ideas Are Not Wasted
When Jai was younger, he was always interested in technology, cameras, apps and creating things.
Not all of those early ideas became successful businesses. In fact, most of them didn’t.
But looking back, none of them were wasted.
Each little project taught him something about finding information, solving problems, asking people for help, working through roadblocks and turning an idea into something real.
I think we sometimes judge children’s ideas too quickly by whether they make money. Often the real value is in everything they learn while giving the idea a go.

One of the advantages of being the youngest of seven children is having older brothers and sisters who have already made plenty of mistakes for you to learn from!
Chayse is nine years younger than Jai and is now at a similar stage to where Jai was years ago. He has plenty of ideas, lots of ambition and is trying to work out which direction to take.
Jai cannot give him a guaranteed path to success, but he can share what worked, what didn’t and what he wishes he had understood earlier.
Sometimes that kind of honest advice is worth far more than a polished success story.

Sometimes the best learning happens when you are not really planning for it.
On a ten-hour road trip to Geraldton, Jai started talking to his younger brother Chayse about what it would actually take to build a million-dollar business.
There was no classroom, whiteboard or formal business meeting. Just two brothers, a long stretch of road and plenty of time to talk.
What followed was a very practical conversation about ideas, customers, money, mistakes and the kind of life Chayse actually wants to build.

One of the most interesting things about raising seven children is realising that, in the end, you have very little control over who they become.

As parents, we can create opportunities, introduce them to good people, talk openly about money, ideas, purpose and responsibility, and encourage them to believe in themselves. But each child will still take those lessons in their own direction.

Our seven children have certainly not followed one neat version of success. Some have built businesses, some have built communities, and others have followed their interests in music, art, storytelling, teaching, travel and other meaningful work.

I think that has been one of our biggest lessons as parents. We were never trying to raise seven identical entrepreneurs. We were simply trying to raise capable young people who believed they could create a life that suited them.

A disappointing result can easily become an identity statement for a child.
“I didn’t get the mark I hoped for” becomes:
“I’m not smart.”
“I made a mistake” becomes:
“I always mess things up.”
“I felt nervous” becomes:
“I’m not confident.”
One of the most useful things we can do as parents and teachers is help children separate the event from who they are.
The result is information.
The mistake is something to learn from.
The uncomfortable moment is something they survived.
None of these things is a permanent description of the child.

One of the quietest things shaping a child’s future may be the story they carry about themselves.
“I’m not smart enough.”
“I’m just bad at maths.”
“Other people can do that, but I can’t.”
“I always mess things up.”
When thoughts like these are repeated often enough, they can begin to feel like facts.
Our newest Enterprise for Kids article explores limiting beliefs in children and four simple tools parents and teachers can use to help children build a stronger inner story.
It is not about telling children they are perfect or pretending difficult things are easy.
It is about helping them understand:
A result is feedback.
A mistake is something to learn from.
A difficult moment does not define who they are.

It Was Never Only About Money.

Looking back, the little businesses were never really about how much money the kids made. The honey pots, lolly bags, market stalls and business ideas were simply opportunities to practise something bigger.

Confidence.
Communication.
Responsibility.
Problem-solving.

The courage to try something, make a mistake and have another go.

A child does not need to launch a successful business to benefit from enterprise. Sometimes the greatest result is simply discovering:

“I had an idea, I took action, and I was capable of doing more than I thought.”

That belief can stay with them long after the little business has disappeared.

We started Enterprise for Kids back in 2012.
At the time, our seven children were young and our days were filled with honey businesses, lolly bags, market stalls, money lessons, leadership camps and all sorts of family experiments.
Then life got busy.
The kids grew up. The blog went quiet.
But the journey never really stopped.
All these years later, our seven children have taken seven very different paths. Some are building businesses. Some are creating art, writing and music. Some are working in digital entrepreneurship, leadership and community. All of them are still learning, changing and finding their own way.
We have finally written the update we have wanted to share for a very long time.
