Wow! If it can do this for
Stroke patients imagine what singing can do for children in their earliest stages of development.

A recent study reveals that singing significantly aids in language recovery for stroke patients with aphasia. Aphasia, a speech disorder caused by strokes, impairs language comprehension and production, affecting about 40% of stroke survivors.

The study shows that singing helps repair the brain’s language network by enhancing neuroplasticity. MRI scans of 54 aphasia patients revealed that singing increased grey matter volume in the left frontal lobe and improved connectivity in the language network, both in the left and right hemispheres.

This resulted in better speech production. The study supports singing as a cost-effective, supplementary therapy that can be performed in group settings or at home, making it an accessible rehabilitation option for improving speech and reducing social isolation.

Students who struggle with literacy might just need a little rhythm in their lives! 🧠 Research highlights that rhythm-based music education can help boost literacy skills, especially for those who need it most.

When students engage in rhythm activities—clapping, tapping, or drumming—they’re not just making music; they’re building pathways in the brain that support reading and language development. 🎵

Does all music learning enhance brain development? This is an important question as we examine the research around the impact of music learning on the brain. It is vital for music educators, leaders and parents that are making decisions about music learning to understand that not all music learning has the capacity to enhance brain development.

At this moment in time, how many of these factors can you tick off on in music programs or your own child’s experience? Better still, if you had to pick one which could be done better, which one would it be?

Love this from Julie Wylie Musical Play

The Power of Play
Play is pivotal in children's music learning. From the beginning of life they are learning through their senses, so use experiences that incorporate all of the elements of music. Make use of steady beat through patting, rocking, clapping, moving to the beat. Play interactive relationship based music games together. When you sing, say, move and Play together, this activates every part of the brain. It releases feel good endorphins like dopamine,. Musical Play can underpin every aspect of children's learning such as music, language, reading, maths, science and it's fun.
