La Trobe University Greek Society - LUGS

La Trobe University Greek Society - LUGS Promoting and supporting our Greek culture and traditions to youth through various university events.

As young Hellenes in the diaspora we want to ensure that our connection to our culture, traditions, history and language never fades. We are a not-for profit, student run, university society that holds various and multiple events throughout the year to give other Greeks and philhellenes the opportunity to immerse themselves in our culture. These range from traditional tavern nights, to Greek trivi

a nights, to Greek food days where we give our peers just a small taste of some of our most well-known Greek delicacies (souvlakia, anyone?)

We are also affiliated and involved with NUGAS, the National Union of Greek Australian Students who also run a very broad range of events and participate in many community campaigns, events and incentives. LUGS, and our fellow university Greek Societies, play a vital role in the organization and promotion of these events. The Speak Greek in March campaign and the Greek Independence Day March are only two small examples of LUGS' involvement in the wider community. The annual NUGAS Ball is also one of the most highly-anticipated youth events of the year. While we are definitely about having fun and enjoying the entertaining and 'lighter-hearted' aspects of our culture, we definitely haven't dismissed the importance of involving ourselves and supporting our wider community to ensure that our traditions and Hellenism is kept alive for future generations. We want and need to give back to the people who have kept alive these traditions for us to enjoy - and continue to keep alive - so far away from Greece herself.

Today marks 52 years since the unlawful invasion and attempted ethnic and religious cleansing of Cyprus by Turkish forces.

For 52 years the island of Cyprus has been illegally occupied, with the occupation violating countless international laws, treaties and the United Nations Charter of Nations.

• During the invasion there were countless instances of murder, r**e, torture

• There was numerous instances of destruction of personal and public property and monuments of personal, cultural, religious and historical significance

• There were concentration camps were established on the island for Greek Cypriots

• 160,000+ Greek Cypriots were forced out of their families homes and off of their land

• Almost 2000 Greek Cypriots are still officially missing after the brutalities

• Turkey continues to illegally occupy almost 40% of the island to this day

We will never forget the atrocities that took place 52 years ago and we acknowledge the unlawful nature of the ongoing occupation. We will forever hope for a free Cyprus.

Χριστός Ανέστη και Καλό Πάσχα from the LUGS Committee!

Our lovely committee members have shared a few snaps of some of the ways we celebrate Greek Orthodox Holy Week and Easter: weaving palm crosses for Palm Sunday, baking koulourakia and tsourekia, decorating the Epitaphio on Good Friday, attending church services as we follow the Epitaphios around the block on Good Friday and bringing our lambathades on Holy Saturday to get the Agios Fos when it strikes midnight, magiritsa on Sunday morning, tsougrisma with red eggs and Easter lunch or dinner with family!

We hope you were able to celebrate this festive season surrounded by loved ones! 🤍☦️

Today on the 25th of March, we celebrate Greek Independence Day. It is on this day in 1821 that the Greek War of Independence officially commenced against the Ottoman Empire, who had occupied and enslaved Greece for almost 400 years.

We celebrate the courage and strength of the Greek Revolutionary fighters and we pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives for Greece and its freedom.

Today, we also celebrate the Annunciation of the Theotokos and to all those who celebrate we wish you a happy name day 🤍

the LUGS committee had a great day today representing their respective cultural organisations and societies (NUGAS Victoria, Pontiaki Estia, Pallaconian Brotherhood of Melbourne & Victoria, Cyprus Community of Melbourne & Victoria, Lemnian Community of Victoria) and celebrating 205 years of Greek Independence at the Greek National Day Parade 2026 🇬🇷

21/03/2026

In March we speak Greek — a movement founded here in Melbourne over a decade ago to encourage the global diaspora to speak, practice and share the Greek language 🙌

To promote the Greek language within the Greek youth diaspora and to celebrate La Trobe University’s status as the only tertiary institution in Victoria offering Modern Greek Studies, our La Trobe University Greek Society committee decided to run a Greek language promotion on fr**edes at the La Trobe University Student Union Festival 🎊

Dozens of students and staff of all backgrounds ordered their fr**edes from our committee in Greek, and a few lovely participants agreed to give their orders on camera 📸

Whether they were native speakers or it was their first time speaking Greek, we think they all did a great job (and it was great practice for upcoming Euro summer 🏖️)!
