These are Middle Leader positions commencing from January 2027, in conjunction with a permanent teaching role at the college.

𝗔 𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗝𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗘 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘: Learning Japanese is about so much more than learning a language! Learning a second language gives students the opportunity to explore new perspectives, traditions and ways of life. It builds cultural understanding, curiosity and global awareness while developing valuable communication skills.

Our Year 9 Japanese students recently took their learning beyond the classroom by cooking okonomiyaki (お好み焼き)! Through food, students were able to experience an important part of Japanese culture while having plenty of fun along the way.

Language + culture + hands-on experiences = learning that students remember.

𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗨𝗥𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬: Our annual Pink and Purple Day saw students and staff proudly dress in support of the Cancer Council and BreastScreen Queensland.

Led by our Certificate III Business students, the day featured the sale of pink and purple ribbons, lollies and biscuit bags, raising valuable funds for these worthy organisations. We are incredibly proud of the students' efforts in planning and running this meaningful fundraising event.

𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗔𝗟’𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: Last week it was great to see so many students and families coming into the school to consult with our staff for Year 10 SET Plan interviews. Taking the time to consider future pathways in partnership is critical to help young people discern a positive pathway, through and beyond school, that they, families and the school are all invested in. This also helps us to work together as stakeholders to help young people work towards personal excellence in their chosen pathways.

This year, one of the many great strengths of Shalom College, that I have discovered, is the significant number of pathways available for our students. Having a diverse range of pathways, and valuing each and every one of them, enables all students to know there are many pathways towards success in school and in life. This also helps to grow the self-esteem of all of our students. They learn that we value all of their chosen pathways into future life and make provisions for all students to work towards them.

At Shalom College, this commitment to diverse pathways is evidence of an important aspect of our school culture. Our belief is that each student is uniquely created in the image and likeness of God. Every young person possesses distinct, God-given gifts and a specific purpose to fulfil in life. By nurturing these individual talents, we are not just preparing students for an ATAR or future career but helping them to further discern who they are as people, what they can do and how they might make a difference in the world by honouring their own gifts and talents.

Guided by the uniqueness of each student and the pathways we provide, our hope is that our students grow faith in themselves and the value they can give to the world. We hope that our students trust the college and their families have their best interests in mind for where their journeys may lead them. We hope that a positive pathway leads to a positive future for each and every one of our students, honouring their own unique gifts, talents and passions.

𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗠 𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗧 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗: Presented at each College Assembly, the Shalom Spirit Award recognises students who go above and beyond to make a positive contribution to our College community. Nominated by our House Captains, students are acknowledged for demonstrating the charism of their House through their actions and commitment to others, with one recipient selected by the Student Leadership Team to receive the award and a tuckshop voucher.

Congratulations to Olivia P (Hogan House), our latest Shalom Spirit Award recipient! 👏

Olivia was recognised for stepping outside her comfort zone when presenting her ideas on the school uniform policy during a meeting with Mr Wearmouth. She spoke confidently and respectfully, relying only minimally on her notes and demonstrating initiative and a willingness to have her voice heard.

𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗠 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗪𝗥𝗔𝗣-𝗨𝗣: Set on 175 acres along the Burnett River, Chaverim is Shalom's dedicated outdoor education facility. This year, Year 7, 8 and 10 students participated in a three-day camp, with each experience designed to build on students' skills and knowledge as they progress through the program.

Year 7 students embraced their first Shalom camp, building new friendships through orienteering, low ropes activities and a day of canoeing on the Burnett River. Year 8 students strengthened teamwork, trust and resilience through challenges including raft building, the Hickory Jump and Mid Ropes Course. For Year 10 students, their final camp saw them put three years of learning into action before finishing with the High Ropes Course and Mohawk Walk.

A huge thank you to our Chaverim staff for their hard work in coordinating and running each camp, as well as the teachers and teacher assistants who give their time to support students, helping create safe, rewarding and unforgettable experiences. ☀️🌿💚

𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦 𝗢𝗭𝗧𝗔𝗚 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣𝗦: Seven teams recently travelled to the Sunshine Coast to compete at the Queensland All Schools Oztag Championships. This year, 428 teams and more than 5,800 students competed across the three-day event. Our strong standing at state level continues, with six teams qualifying for the Quarter Finals and three progressing through to the Semi Finals.
