We had a potion-making station with a large variety of items, such as old herb and spice bottles, scoops, funnels, herbs, flowers and, of course, our coloured water. The aim of the activity was to use our fine motor, imagination and creativity skills to scoop, transfer and engage with the variety of items.

The children were extremely intrigued by this activity, immediately running over and staying at the activity for the longest period of time. They began by saying, “Mmmm, it’s purple,” as they held the coloured water in the herb jar up in the air. They investigated it and decided it needed something extra. They began scooping and pouring the mixture from glass to glass using scoops, jars and some funnels. When the educator asked what they were doing, they replied, “It’s my watermelon juice. I’m adding in some blueberries to it.”

The children showed wonderful imagination and creativity skills throughout the activity.

Exploring Cloud Dough ☁️

Today the children enjoyed exploring cloud dough, engaging their senses through touch, movement and imaginative play. The children used their hands to squeeze, squish, scoop and crumble the soft, fluffy dough, discovering how it felt between their fingers.

The children used different tools and containers to scoop and transfer the cloud dough, filling cups and making their own creations. Some children enjoyed patting and moulding the dough, while others experimented with making marks and different shapes.

This sensory experience encouraged the children to explore texture, cause and effect, fine-motor skills and hand strength. It also supported creativity, concentration and language development as the children shared their discoveries with educators and friends.

The children were enthusiastic and engaged throughout the experience, enjoying the calming and hands-on nature of cloud dough play.

💧 Magic Water Painting

Today in the toddlers’ room, we explored the magic water painting mat. The children were very enthusiastic to join in, eagerly picking up the large paint brushes and dipping them into the water before making marks across the mat.

The children experimented with different strokes, circles, swirls, lines and patterns, watching with curiosity as their water marks appeared on the mat. As the activity continued, the children began exploring with their hands. They dipped their hands into the water and created handprints, hand marks and new patterns, enjoying the sensory experience of feeling the water on their skin.

Some children also used the paintbrushes to paint water onto their hands before pressing them onto the mat. They explored rubbing and moving their hands across the surface, creating different marks and textures.

The children remained engaged in this experience for most of the morning, showing wonderful concentration, curiosity and creativity.

This experience supported the children’s fine-motor development, hand-eye coordination, sensory exploration and creativity, while also encouraging them to experiment with cause and effect as they discovered how their movements created different marks on the mat.

🌱 Gardening in the Nursery 🌱

In the nursery, the children enjoyed exploring our new garden bed, getting curious about the space and discovering all the possibilities it has to offer. The children explored the soil with their hands, feeling the texture and investigating their new gardening space.

We are getting ready to plant a selection of beautiful herbs and are excited to watch them grow together. 🌿

Gardening experiences provide children with wonderful opportunities to connect with nature while developing their sensory awareness, fine motor skills, coordination and curiosity. As we plant, water and care for our herbs and caring for living things and the patience involved in watching something grow.

We can’t wait to watch our little garden grow alongside our little gardeners! 🌱💚

We explored a fun and creative bubble blowing painting experience with the children. The children were excited to use straws to blow bubbles into coloured paint, watching as the bubbles grew and overflowed over the cups.
We then placed paper over the bubbles, creating beautiful bubble prints and colourful artwork. The children were fascinated by the bubbles popping, the colours mixing together and the different patterns appearing on their paper.
This was a wonderful sensory and creative experience that encouraged the children to explore, experiment and express themselves through art.
Benefits of Bubble Blowing Painting
🫧 Fine motor skills – Holding straws and placing paper onto the bubbles helps develop hand and finger strength.
🎨 Creativity and self-expression – Children can explore colours, patterns and create their own unique artwork.
🌈 Colour recognition and mixing – Encourages children to identify colours and observe what happens when colours mix together.
👀 Hand-eye coordination – Children practise coordinating their hands and eyes as they blow bubbles and create prints.
🧠 Science and discovery – Children explore cause and effect, observing how blowing creates bubbles and how bubbles pop.
💬 Language development – Encourages children to talk about what they see, such as big bubbles, small bubbles, colours and popping.
🤝 Social skills – Children learn to share resources, take turns and enjoy the experience together.

🎨 Colour Mixing & Fizzing Science

Today we explored colour mixing and science using bicarb soda and coloured vinegar. The children were fascinated as they used eye droppers to carefully transfer the coloured vinegar onto the bicarb soda. We watched with excitement as the mixture bubbled, fizzed and reacted!

The children then experimented with adding different colours over the top of the existing colours. As the colours combined, we discovered how new colours were created, encouraging the children to make predictions and observe the changes taking place.

🌈 Benefits for Children

This experience supported children to:

* Develop fine motor skills through squeezing and controlling the eye droppers.
* Build hand-eye coordination as they carefully transferred the coloured vinegar.
* Explore early science concepts through observing the reaction between the bicarb soda and vinegar.
* Develop colour recognition and understanding by experimenting with primary and secondary colours.
* Encourage curiosity and investigation as children watched the fizzing reaction and wondered what would happen next.
* Develop prediction and problem-solving skills as they experimented with different colours and quantities.
* Explore cause and effect, discovering that their actions created a visible reaction.
* Use sensory exploration through sight, sound and hands-on experimentation.
* Encourage creativity and self-expression as children created their own colour combinations.
* Build language and communication skills as educators introduced words such as mix, combine, fizz, bubble, react, dissolve and change.

It was wonderful to see the children so engaged, curious and excited as they explored colour, science and cause-and-effect through play! 🌈🧪✨
