There is no academic requirement for membership of U3A, and there is no distinction in status between tutors and students.

U3A functions with the philosophy of "learning for the joy of learning" with the close cooperation and participation of its members who are in their "third age". Most tutors come from within the membership. They tap great reservoirs of learning and experience amongst members who by tutoring classes, pass on their knowledge for the benefit of all. Our tutors are people who have skills, experience a

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edwin Faint, a dedicated volunteer tutor at U3A Bundaberg, who deeply loved his role and greatly enjoyed his time with us. Edwin was a former teacher and principal, becoming a teacher/librarian for 21 years. After his retirement he found great joy in sharing his love of our fascinating language. When he found that existing crossword dictionaries were neither deep nor broad enough, Edwin decided someone should do something about it, and he spent almost 5 years of his spare time compiling The Ultimate Crossword Dictionary into the most detailed and comprehensive book of its type—certainly in Australia and possibly the world. He also produced a book entitled ‘My Vocabulary Friend’, which outlines the correct usage and spelling of words, and also contains questions to make you think.
In over 20 years of membership with U3A Bundaberg, Edwin tutored a class called “Living with Language” and helped with the Bird Observers group as well. Edwin said that what he liked most about his work as a volunteer tutor was that he was always learning things from other people.
Edwin’s funeral will be held on the 29th of July at 1:30 PM at Christ Church Anglican Church, corner of Maryborough and Woongarra Streets, Bundaberg.
His family has suggested wearing pale blue as it was Edwin's favourite colour.
