Soooooo true! Half a century in education ( teaching at the chalk face) and suddenly some trained in another (allied health profession) knows more about teaching than I.. really??!

Learning to read is not child's play 04/07/2023

"When children are struggling with literacy in Year 3 (and often unfortunately beyond), what changes their trajectories is not more time spent playing, but time with tutors (if they are fortunate to be able to access them), who unlock for them the mysteries of how their writing system works"
As always... sound words from Prof Pamela Snow. For those parents and educators who are still grappling with the importance of explicit teaching vs play based/immersion when learning to read, write and spell, Prof Pamela Snow's Blogspot read below is a must!

Learning to read is not child's play In a recent post on the AARE Blog, Edith Cowan University academic Dr Pauline Roberts raises a  number of points about the importance of play in the early years of school and strongly pushes back on the role of formal assessment, such as NAPLAN. Thank you Five from Five! Some really useful and interesting links to follow

Text or passage reading fluency is generally defined as having three components: accuracy, rate, and prosody (or expression). Children have poor text reading fluency if they read many words of a passage incorrectly, if they read text slowly and with obvious effort, or if they read in a stilted or robotic way.

The three components of fluency, and the interactions between them, have been studied in detail. It is useful to understand these concepts in order get a better sense of how they inform teaching practice, especially for children whose fluency is affected by difficulties with one or more of them.

Thanks for this very explicit Infograph

The science of reading is a vast, multidisciplinary body of evidence that provides conclusive, empirically supported research that identifies how we learn to read. We read and hear alot about the science of reading and many people think this just means phonics instruction.
The Science of Reading is much more than just phonics, in fact phonics is only one component.
In 2000, the U.S National Reading Panel released a report that identified 5 essential components or ‘pillars’ that every child needs to be taught to become literate.
These include:
1. Phonemic Awareness
2. Phonics
3. Vocabulary
4. Fluency
5. Comprehension
The definitions in the image I’ve posted are very basic explanations used by Dr Kymyona Burk in the movie “The Right to Read”, to help explain simply what each component means.
