Nothing like a bit of overwhelm to completely constipate your productivity. The key to getting your productivity flowing again is to break bigger tasks into lots of little wins.

As I've always said, clarity is just like our bowels - when we don't have it, nothing moves, everything feels stuck, things get uncomfortable and we feel heavy (and grumpy). But, when you do have clarity, everything flows better, you feel lighter, nothing is as hard and there's room for you to take on more without feeling like you're backed up.

Trust me to turn productivity into a poo metaphor🤣

But anyway - here's my take on a "to do" list (I made it for myself because I needed something a little more exciting).

You're welcome to download a copy here if you'd like to use it too or share it around. No email address required - just click the link, hit download and Bob's your uncle!

(I've added multiples onto the file so you can grab a heap.)

Now, I'm going to say right up front that I'm never going to quit my day job and become a graphic designer - as you can see, my skills aint that much chop! Full disclosure, I did ask AI to have a crack, and even though the result was sensational - in that I lost every single one of my wrinkles, it wasn't me and it wasn't the reason I wanted to add some cool graphics.

The REAL reason I wanted to get your attention, is that I'd like you to notice these people - in fact, let me reword that - I'd like you to notice these freaking ROCKSTARS!

THESE, are the men and women from Western Power who leave their own homes in the South West to restore power to yours when the storms hit. This bunch of superheroes are the ones out there in the pelting rain, working on power poles in stupendously crappy conditions while we're all cowering at home trying to calm the cat down and sulking because we didn't charge the iPad up for longer.

I was lucky enough to spend an hour with them the other day, taking them on a lap around the Drama Triangle and exploring how teams (and all of us as humans, really) get dragged down when people avoid the work, take responsibility for everyone else’s work, or just become plain hard work.

NONE of us are immune to getting sucked into the Drama Triangle, so it was a real privilege to give this phenomenal crew a bit of insight that'll hopefully make life a little easier for themselves and each other, while they’re out there making life a whole lot easier for the rest of us.

Big, BIG thank you to the absolute powerhouse (yes, I went there), Corrie Nottle for inviting me, and for trusting me with her team.

Huge credit to this group of Warrikal leaders for throwing themselves into professional development - literally.

The Click Colours training I ran for them put the four most common communication styles on a metaphorical milk crate to not only give these leaders insight into their own style, but to also help them understand other people’s. They explored their own communication defaults, how those defaults might impact other people, and how to deliver a message that doesn’t just make sense to them, but also to the people they’re needing to lead.

Self-awareness doesn’t have to be heavy. Accountability doesn’t have to be boring. And leadership training definitely doesn’t need to feel like a slow death by PowerPoint. Additionally, communication training should help people strengthen their messaging not soften it.

BTW, I don’t make all my clients contort themselves for the camera, I’m just lucky enough to get the fun ones who are prepared to throw themselves into the photos as much as they throw themselves into the learning.

Imagine if everyone at work wore a T-shirt that listed instructions on how to communicate with them.

✅ Be brief, be direct and use a max of three dots points please.

✅ Email me a heads up first. I need time to prepare because I don’t like being put on the spot.

✅ Be real, be human, be kind and bring me coffee.

✅ Big picture first! Details really do my head in.

The reason tricky conversations are … well, tricky is usually because we can’t predict how the other person will respond. So, we rehearse, we worry, we forget our filter, we barrel in bluntly or we soften our message so much and drop hints that the other person doesn’t catch.

Regardless of where your delivery sits between volcanic or vague, if your communication isn’t received well, here’s why:

People are not difficult.
People are just different.

If you don’t make the effort to understand and speak their language then you can’t expect them to understand and speak yours.

That was the underlying theme of communication training I was invited to run with an absolute ripper of a group of people from The Rural Clinical School of WA at Aloft Perth yesterday.

They came together from all around the state to collaborate, grow and learn how to be better for themselves, for each other, for the medical students they support and the rural communities that benefit from the medical placements they make possible.

We explored the four communication styles, what each one needs from you, how to recognise each one and to stop turning our (often incorrect) assumptions about them into grenades that annihilate relationships, performance and communication.

It was so much fun seeing everyone get a new appreciation for, and understanding of themselves and each other.

Click Colours is like a human translation tool.

It helps people stop misreading each other, taking things personally, or trying to change or save others, and teaches them how to bring out the best in everyone.

Including themselves.

And now I’m curious - what would YOUR t-shirt say?

Proactive leaders seek feedback (by asking the right questions), listen without defensiveness, and use what they hear to improve.

Reactive leaders avoid the conversation because the truth may not support the image they have of themselves.

Which one are you going to be?

One of the main reasons argy bargy is so difficult to deal with in the workplace (and at home) is because we’re not dealing with conflict, we’re dealing with combat – and the later is all about winning, not about solving.

Conflict is one of the healthiest things you can have in a relationship, because conflict is “I don’t see it the way you do, therefore, can you help me understand how you see it?”

Where as combat, is “I don’t see it the way you do, therefore, you’re wrong!”

One is going to give you a plethora of new possibilities, creative solutions and buy-in from those around you.

The other is going to make your environment reminiscent of puberty, where the biggest tantrum wins.

So, how do you prevent combat and get everyone to embrace healthy, grow-inducing conflict?

Easy!

You let everyone know beforehand, what will happen when things get tense, instead of trying to resolve it (or avoid it) once it does.

In next week’s Reboot Toolkit, I am sending everyone a copy of my Open Dialogue Agreement – a one page, 10-line document that I guarantee will create a shift in how people communicate.

The Agreement takes less than a minute to read and I invite you to slap it up in the tearoom, hand it to everyone at induction, pass it around at your toolbox meetings or better still, stick it on the back of all the toilet doors.

If you’re not already receiving the Toolkits, you can subscribe here: https://tinyurl.com/RebootYourWorkplaceToolkit

Because the best way to deal with combat is to prevent it, but you need to teach people how.

The moment we draw breath, put the issue on a metaphorical milk crate and look at it from other angles, we become less reactive, more curious, and a hell of a lot easier to be around.

If you’re fighting to be right, you’ve already lost!

Reason 43,783 why I love my job.

A coaching client just sent me this gif after our session together this morning. She came in downplaying herself, feeling like a bit of an impostor and believing the reason she got her leadership gig was more about luck than skill.

She left with a new way of looking at her skill base, the value she brings to the organisation and (sorry not sorry) a bit of a sore head from the aha moments that started collapsing those bitey self-doubty beliefs.

Best news - she didn't need to start believing she is a freaking rock star, she just needed to learn how to stop looking for (and unintentionally fabricating) evidence that she isn't.

Leadership is so much easier once you can stop a lack of confidence sinking its teeth into your competence.

If you'd like some of what she's having, you can book your session here https://calendly.com/rebootyourlife/professional-development-coaching

What would happen, if just for one day, we all had a thought bubble above our heads revealing what we’re are actually thinking?

Do you reckon you’d be in strife?

Miss Nyla here on the other hand does not need a thought bubble.

I was in the supermarket and I had a lady come out of nowhere and throw her arms around me – a tad disconcerting let me tell you! Reckon if I knew karate she’d have been a goner

Anyway, seems she signed up to an online course I ran aaaaages ago and she’s off conquering stuff and feeling a million bucks and she’s attributing that to me. As tempting as it was to get a fat head, I had to correct her because I am merely a tool (haha – many would agree) but she’s the one that actually used it.

Anyway, it was a pretty special experience, and even though I haven’t thought about that course for ages, it inspired me to bring it out of mothballs in case you reckon now's a good time to tell control freaks, all those nasty pasties and while we're at it, that bloody inner critic to jog on too!

It used to be a 6-week thing with a community and challenges with a hefty price tag, but now you can just download the whole thing and do it on your own for just 45 bucks!

Kind of like a pep talk from me on tap. Lord have mercy!

There are 19 video lessons that you can watch, listen to or mix it up and do a bit of both. Digest some, digest them all and do it in whatever order you like and keep it forever.

WARNING: I made it a few years ago, so I was a bit more theatrical in those days and far less filtered – hence the title LOL UNFCK Yourself & Find U. Mind you, I'm not crass or vulgar, just .... um .... real I guess.

In case you’d like to know more, these are the modules:

Module 1: Overcome Self-Sabotage
Module 2: How to Stop the Drama
