We thank Pallyan, son of Murrindindi (Ngurungaeta of the Wurrundjeri people) — for performing the Smoking Ceremony at Kalker Montessori.

A generous gift of goodwill, the ceremony brought our community together in a meaningful moment of connection — with the land, with one another, and with the Traditional Custodians who have cared for Country for generations.

When little hands are given meaningful work, something much bigger is taking place — concentration deepens, independence grows, and the mind is quietly being built through experience.

There is something quietly powerful about watching a child invite someone they love into their world. ❤️

For a little while, the roles shifted. The children became the guides — carefully demonstrating their Montessori work, sharing what they knew, and proudly leading the way. And beside them were fathers and those who hold a father’s place: watching, listening, trying, learning and simply being present.

Perhaps that is one of the most meaningful parts of fatherhood — knowing when to guide, but also knowing when to follow. Giving a child the space to say, “Let me show you,” and making them feel that what they have to share is worth stopping for.

These may look like small moments — hands working side by side, a shared activity, a book read together — but to a child, presence is never small.

To the fathers, and those who hold a father’s place in their hearts, thank you for walking beside them as they grow.

What looks like a few blocks and loose parts became a home with a plan.

Built entirely by the children, each piece was chosen and placed with purpose — a place to sit, a space for shoes, a telephone, and even the black reels thoughtfully designated as the toilets.

This is where imagination becomes more than pretend play. Children are planning, problem-solving, negotiating ideas and giving meaning to the world they create together.

In Montessori, freedom is not the absence of boundaries. Children are given the space to make choices, follow their ideas and work independently, while learning to respect others, care for their environment and work within clear, consistent expectations. It is within this balance that independence, creativity and self-discipline begin to grow.

They didn’t just build a house. They built their own understanding of how a home works.

Celebrating Dr. Maria Montessori, through the ideas of the children. 🤍

When we wondered together how we should celebrate her birthday, the ideas came from the children— “Let’s make a cake!” “We should decorate the classroom!” “Let’s play games!” 🎂

And so, we celebrated her in the very way she taught us — by following the child.

What began as their idea became meaningful, hands-on work. The children voted on the cake they wanted to make, carefully cut the ingredients, mixed, and baked together. They shared their ideas and took an active part in creating their own celebration.

Practical life, independence, choice, collaboration and purposeful work — Montessori principles naturally woven into a very special day.

156 years later, her legacy lives on — in the voices, choices and capable hands of the children she devoted her life to understanding.
