As part of our environmental theme, today’s play experiences were all nature based 🌿 Nature play not only helps our little ones develop a sense of respect and care for the environment, but also fosters imagination, creativity, development of the senses, social emotional skills, and more! ✨

After some free play in the morning, we were buzzing with excitement to get started on our world bee day activities 😉🐝 We enjoyed learning more about these beautiful creatures and their important role in our environment as we…

🌸 Explored our independent learning table which had a mini bee sensory tray (with lots of little bees to spot and rice to scoop!), our bee life cycle model, and some special books about bees and similar minibeasts!

🐝 Made some bee inspired playdough creations using black and yellow loose parts 🖤💛

🌸 Used our growing pre-school skills to create some beautiful bee collages using card and glue sticks 🎨

🐝 Played at our “why do we need bees?” tuff tray. This experience helped us to reinforce our understanding of bees and their importance as pollinators. It also sparked some fabulous maths work as we collected and counted the little bees!

Chasing away the gloom with some spring themed play 🌼🌿

We continued our seasons theme with some wintery play in the morning at our independent learning table which featured a snowy tracing tray and a simple snowman sensory tray ✨ The kids were very engaged as they played here, making lines and patterns in the coconut (fabulous pre-writing work! ✍🏻), exploring the snowflakes and snowballs with their hands ❄️, and scooping, pouring and mixing the rice (great for working on our hand eye coordination skills and wrist strength 💪🏻). Later in the morning, we joined together for some creative play at our winter play dough station. We had lots of wintery loose parts to decorate our “snow” dough with and the kids loved exploring the different textures and sensations that they offered 🖐🏻We wrapped up our morning with some messy play at our big tray where we challenged the kids to melt the cornflour snowman ⛄️ The kids absolutely loved this experience and we spent lots of time here pouring, mixing, scooping and splashing!

We continued our seasons theme today by learning about Autumn 🍁 We kicked this off with some play at our independent learning table which had an Autumn themed mini sensory tray ready for our little learners to explore! There were lots of autumn toned loose parts to find as well as plenty of red rice to scoop, pour and run our hands through 🧡❤️💛 A little later we gathered for group time where we looked at pictures of Autumn leaves and enjoyed an Autumn themed letter hunt where we took turns searching for and then rubbing off the letters with our initials on them 🍂 We were then ready to create some Autumn leaf artworks, drawing inspiration from the images we had just seen! 🎨 Using shaving foam, food colouring and a squeegee, we created some beautiful, marbled leaves - it was so fun watching the colours and patterns appear as we pulled the squeegee down 🍁We wrapped up our morning with some imaginative play at our Autumn fairy small world 🧚‍♀️🍄 This tray sparked some magical make-believe play as we used our fairies to act our little scenes, cooked soup with the mushrooms, and made the Autumn “leaves” fall down from the trees ✨

Today at Miss Rachel’s we enjoyed…
☀️Using our imaginations at our independent play table which today featured some ocean themed books 📚, sea creature finger puppets 🦀, and a beach small world with some little people for acting out scenes, coloured rice for scooping, and our magnetic fish for catching! 🏝️🎣
☀️Using our creativity and growing fine motor skills to create some summer sun sun catchers! 🎨 The boys all had a fantastic go at using their pincer grasps and hand eye coordination to pick up the cellophane/ crepe paper and place it down onto the sticky side of their suns 🤏🏻
☀️Exploring the different sensations in our summer sun tuff tray ✨ There were lots of beautiful yellow and gold loose parts in todays tray that were perfect for finding and hiding in our little jars ✨and the split peas sparked lots of great fine motor work as we scooped, swished, poured and transferred them between containers 🥣

This week we’ll be learning about seasons and weather, inspired by our kiddos’ current interest in our group time calendar ❄️🌸☀️🍁 We kicked this off today with…
✨Some fine motor work at our independent learning table which had some cardboard spring flowers and lots of natural loose parts for the kids to decorate with.
✨Some group time where we learnt about the four British based seasons as well as the 6 Indigenous seasons (we looked at the seasons as described by the Tharawal people whose traditional land is close to us in the Blue Mountains!). We played a simple matching game to go over our learning, matching the name cards of each season to their spot on our seasons tree 🧩
✨Some messy, sensory play at our tuff tray which featured a larger version of our seasons tree. 🌳
✨Some threading practise as we made rain cloud hangings using pipe cleaners and beads (perfect for working on our dexterity and hand eye coordination!)🌧️

After seeing a “gluing station” online I was inspired to create a similar set up for my kids. Tweaking things to make it slightly more age appropriate for my current cohort, I landed on a “mark making station”, covering our table with butcher’s paper and allowing the children to have free access to the table and various drawing implements throughout the fortnight. This table evolved to include sticker sheets and foam stickers, glue sticks, scrap cardboard, and scissors. It was very successful and led to lots of great fine motor work as the kids practised snipping, ripped up the cardboard, independently opened and closed the glue sticks and markers, drew pictures and lines, and peeled/ stuck down stickers. There has been a lot of interest in using scissors lately so these became the most popular element of the table. It was amazing to watch the growth in their abilities and confidence when using the scissors with just two weeks of consistent and engaged use!
