Today my eldest started year 2. And as I took the obligatory ‘first day photo’ he was soon joined by his little brother and then by 2 of my full time daycare friends ❤️❤️❤️ I love how family daycare enables children to form such strong relationships with their peers it absolutely feels like extended family ❤️❤️❤️

One thing I take great pride in, is being able to offer regular excursions to our local parks, general store, other family daycare services and the lake! I try to get out, or meet up with another educator at least once a fortnight - if not once a week! There are so many benefits to being able to get out on these excursions!!

Excursions into our local environment help children to develop their sense of Identity- as they spend time in their local community environment, they get to to explore all the wonderful places and features that make their local area unique. (Eylf outcome 1)
Spending time in nature can also help to develop their sense of well-being, as new environments and fresh air can help reduce stress and anxiety. Our excursions also provide opportunities to explore, have fun, use their energy and also learn about the environment and how we can look after it. (Eylf outcomes 2,3&4).

I love watching these little friendships grow ❤️❤️❤️ here we are toasting one another after pouring our own drinks of water with a little assistance from Emily.

Sharing a meal around a table helps to children to develop social skills like building friendships and learning social etiquette such as staying seated whilst eating and practice and develop practical life skills such as pouring a drink, drinking from a cup and on some days when we aren’t eating sandwiches- using utensils.

Maria Montessori believed that it’s important for children to develop these skills and use real resources such as glass cups and ceramics as it helps children to develop their confidence and also helps them to develop an understanding and a respect for their environment and how to care for it.
