The Irlen Diagnostic Clinics on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane help children and adults with reading disabilities by using tinted filter lenses.

Our Clinics are able to diagnose Scotopic Sensitivity, or Irlen Syndrome. Has your child been labelled in school as “dumb”, “stupid” or “lazy”? An undiagnosed or misdiagnosed reading disorder could be the cause and the solution could be much simpler than you think. Struggling readers may actually suffer from a visual perception disorder or Irlen Syndrome, which is caused by sensitivity to particul

ar wavelength of light, causing distortions of print. This can result in a slow reading rate, poor comprehension, an inability to read for a length of time, eye strain and fatigue, difficulty judging distance, headaches and eye strain when using a computer. Research indicates that more than half of people who find reading difficult, fatiguing or stressful, can be helped considerably with Irlen Filter Lenses. At the Irlen Diagnostic Clinic on the Sunshine Coast, we are able to diagnose Irlen Syndrome and conduct assessments to determine a specific tint that will suit the reader. Lenses are then ordered by the diagnostician. The Clinic is run by education expert Peter Freney, who is also President of the Australian Association of Irlen Consultants (AAIC). He has a Masters in Education and has devoted his life to teaching and learning, first as a primary school teacher, then as a high school teacher and now by helping struggling readers. Mr Freney has spent the last 19 years researching and developing techniques to help children with Irlen Syndrome.

Congratulations Larraine Moseley, who has officially just become a 💜 Qualified Irlen Diagnostician 💜

Larraine has a B. Education (Secondary), Grad. Dip. Teacher Librarianship 👩‍🎓, PLUS over 20 years experience as a teacher and teacher librarian.

Larraine is based in CAIRNS - which will be a relief for everyone in Cairns and on the Tablelands - who have been without a local diagnostician since the sad passing of Bill Spooner.

She also has first hand experience with Irlen Syndrome as a mum, advocated locally to raise awareness about Irlen Syndrome since 2016, and organised talks by Bill Spooner at local schools.

Look how many symptoms of Irlen Syndrome are present in other conditions. What's the potential common denominator underlying this symptom overlap? Light sensitivity! Irlen Syndrome affects so much more than reading. This neurological condition can affect the way different parts of the brain communicate with each other, and as a result, Irlen Syndrome can cause physical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive changes and symptoms.
