But wait…there’s more! Scotty and Smithy managed to also find a few that are still out off the Sunny Coast. Thanks for your top tricks and tips guys 👇

❄️ They are a winter species and prefer cooler water in the winter months.
📏 You can find them at a range of depths – from inshore to out on the shelf.
🐟 Live bait is best, with jigs coming close second.

Keep tagging us with any of your , and catches!

Today’s tips for catching come from Ben Job from Fishing Monthly Magazines from a few years ago. He says October is the “number one month” to target Cobia.

Ben finds fishing a live bait of substantial size is probably the best way to attract a big Cobia into a bite. And he says, "My rig usually consists of an 8oz barrel sinker with a swivel above it and a brass ring below it acting as stops, then about 1m of 80lb trace to either one or two 9/0 Mustad hoodlum or Gamakatsu live bait hooks."

Cobia can be found off the Sunshine Coast and people have already been hauling in some nice fish this season. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and catch a Cobia.

Director of Fish Tales, John Suman, says Cobia is a beautiful fish to eat. It is versatile and has a meaty flesh that is firm and dense. 😋 This makes it suitable for a range of preparations from high heat like the BBQ through to roasting, wok frying and even poaching. 🍳👨‍🍳

“Chefs find Cobia fantastic to work with!” says John.

Cobia - GoodFish Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide 21/09/2021

If you haven’t checked out GoodFish: Australia's Sustainable Seafood Guide it’s worth a look. Lots of great info – including on one of our favourites, .

They say “The clean, meaty white flesh of Cobia is suited to a range of cooking methods. It can be eaten raw – as sashimi, in a poké bowl or as ceviche. It is also delicious pan-fried, roast or steamed. Sear the skin on high heat on a BBQ or in a pan to crisp it up, or bake fillets skin-side up in a hot oven. Cobia flesh will remain moist even when cooked with high heat. Cobia can also be cut into chunks and dropped into a soup or curry – the robust, meaty flesh won’t fall apart.”

Although just a note, we checked in with Pacific Reef Fisheries (Australia) Pty Ltd and they are not currently farming Cobia… which means the best way to get some Cobia is to go fish for your own!
