Dear Australian rocketry community,

With significant measures being taken across the country to combat the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the AMRS’ number one priority is ensuring the on-going good health of members and the general public.

Given the requirements on social distancing and that Defence has notified reservists to be on standby, AMRS’ member organisations will be ceasing club launches effective immediately and assessing the situation monthly.

The AMRS Committee would like to thank all of our members, guests and rocket enthusiasts for their understanding during these challenging times that we are all facing in relation to the Coronavirus.

Please contact your local club for more information about local operations. The AMRS will post more information in due course.

The Australian Model Rocket Society Records Committee is excited to announce a new J impulse single motor altitude record of 5336m / 17,507' AGL set by Andrew Hamilton at Westmar, Qld on 13th of March 2015.
Andrew did an excellent job with this scratch built custom carbon fiber rocket called "38s", flown on an Aerotech J510 from the launch site at 260m / 853' AMSL and reaching speeds approaching Mach 2. A Raven 3 was utilised for deployment. Tracking, as well as record verification, was by TeleGPS (uBlox Max 7Q chipset), whilst the text-book recovery was approximately 1.8km from launch.

Congratulations Drew, this is a world class effort! We hope to see many more flights like this from WA!

The AMRS Executive Committee is excited to announce the introduction of the ‘international membership’ (aka AIM) and the Launch Control Officer (LCO)/Range Safety Officer (RSO) Online Course.

With the continual international relationships being formed between AMRS and other national rocketry bodies and the increased number of internationally supported events, the AMRS Executive Committee has created a new International Membership. Anyone wishing to sign up as an AMRS International Member can do so for only $30 at www.rocketry.org.au/join-amrs

The AMRS LCO/RSO Course is now able to be taken online. With an increasing number of members in remote areas and the necessity for more LCOs and RSOs, the online version will allow members to take the course in their own time, 24 hours a day.

The AMRS Inc and its partner member groups, have a membership to suit most people who are interested in rocketry. When joining an existing member rocketry club or group, you will have already become a member of the largest rocketry organisation in Australia.

The Australian Model Rocketry Society's April Launch, hosted by the Queensland Rocketry Society, was held over the weekend of 9 April 2016 at the Westmar high altitude site in Western Queensland, Australia. During the event Nic Lottering flew his 3" minimum diameter rocket "No Big Deal II" on a CTI M2245 to a GPS confirmed altitude of 45,554' AGL (=46,397' MSL; Launch site elevation = 843' MSL). The maximum velocity recorded was 2,323 MPH (3738.5 KMH) at approx. 6,500' AGL equating to an altitude-corrected velocity of Mach 3.12. The rocket was recovered 2.7km NNE from the launch site with full flight data from 2 x Ravens and 1 x 70cm Beeline GPS.

This flight is higher than the Single Motor M-class record of 45,328' AGL set at XPRS (Black Rock Desert, Nevada USA; Launch site elevation = approx. 4,000' MSL) in 2008. It's not every day world records are broken, yet over the past weekend such an event took place.

The AMRS Records Committee has extensively reviewed Nic's supplied flight data and we're thoroughly impressed with his results. Committee Member Chris Barnes was also on hand to witness the flight officially. As such the Records Committee has unanimously approved Nic's Record Application. Congratulations to Nic Lottering for his new M impluse single motor altitude record!

The Australian Model Rocket Society Inc. (AMRS) is pleased to announce a new reciprocal arrangement with the New Zealand Association of Rocketry (NZRA). After the announcement of Australian Rocketry’s Thunda Down Under 2015, and its strict but internationally recognised requirements for certification in Australia, the NZRA proactively refined their existing certification processes thereby ensuring the formal recognition of NZRA Certifications at the event.

Fast forward 12 months and a number of AMRS Executive Committee Members were privileged to attend the NZRA National Launch Day 2016 (NLD). Apart from having the opportunity to attend a world class event, the AMRS were able to witness the professional approach of the NZRA Committee and their HPR certification process. After official discussions between the two organisations, the AMRS is excited to accept the NZRA’s certification processes as equivalent to its own, i.e. held at the same high standards as the AMRS that has led to its acceptance as equivalent to several other international rocketry organisations.

This is an exciting progression for rocketry in Australia and New Zealand!
