The Dairy Research Foundation was established in 1959 to advance the emerging discipline of dairy science and to improve technical practices in the industry. The Group is located at the Camden Campus as part of the University of Sydney. It has a research laboratory known as the M.C.Franklin Laboratory with facilities for carrying out a wide range of research from applied and that focusing on pastu

re management, animal nutrition and whole farm systems to more basic studies. One of the roles of the Dairy Research Foundation is to inform the dairy and general community on the work undertaken by the University and this has lead to the organising of an Annual Symposium held at Camden. The Importance of Dairy Research

The Dairy Research Foundation of the University of Sydney serves a unique role within Australia's dairy industry by integrating a program of basic and applied research at the cutting edge of dairy science and production with extension activities to disseminate this information among dairy farmers nation wide. The commercial competitiveness of our dairy producers relies heavily on the establishment of new technologies for managing and feeding cows to maximise productivity within our Australian environment. These programs would not be possible without the close co-operation and generous financial support of both dairy producers and corporate sponsors.

We are pleased to announce that applications for the Geoff Boxsell Legacy Prize are now open.

Invitation to Students

The Geoff Boxsell Legacy Prize is now open for submissions.

The story of spreadable butter reminds us that some of the most important innovations begin by solving a real problem. Geoff Boxsell and Kevin Richardson combined technical knowledge, practical experience and persistence to develop a product that went on to change consumer expectations around the world.

Geoff received the 2025 Dairy Science Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the dairy industry and has donated two $500 prize vouchers to support future dairy scientists.

Submit a short response (maximum 500 words) to the following question:

”How could your research contribute to significant change in the dairy industry, similar to the impact of spreadable butter?”

Entries should address:
• The problem the research is trying to solve
• Why it matters to farmers, processors, consumers or regional communities
• How it could make a difference to the dairy industry

Two winning students will each receive a $500 gift voucher. Winners will be selected by a small judging panel, with Geoff Boxsell invited to participate, subject to availability. The prizes will be presented by Geoff at a suitable dairy science, industry or student event.

Judging Criteria
Entries will be assessed on:
• Industry relevance
• Potential impact
• Clarity

Eligibility
The competition is open to currently enrolled dairy science students at Australian Universities, including undergraduate and higher degree research students.

Dairy UP officially completed its first 5-year funding cycle in April. We took a moment to take stock of what can be achieved through a unique collaboration of passionate researchers, industry organisations, service providers and government agencies. Together, we delivered the largest ever New South Wales dairy research project; it involved 11 partner organisations, 23 projects, 12 PhD students, 30 monitoring farms and a team of more than 70 people.

Thank you for being part of our journey.
