So why do I only allow a max of 6 students in my group class?
Because it allows the best of both worlds. Yes. The BEST, truly.
We often think that private lessons and group instruction are two different pillars toward music making.
And that is actually true.
They do offer different things.
Private lessons offer refinement and attention to individual detail and group lessons offer ensemble rhythmic awareness and joy.
It’s true, In a larger class size I simply can not give the same level of diagnostic attention required to master complex instruments.
So over the years I have refined my class size and created the very specialised Strum&Sing classes to suit both student/teacher and the parents wallet.
Strum&Sing for the win!
I offer these on both ukulele and guitar.
(Please note, This can not be done on wind instruments. Traditional band instruments you blow into need a traditional private lesson AND group lesson (band/ensemble etc) both together to create a well rounded wind musician. If teachers are offering it, know it won’t work for all in that group. Someone or someone’s WILL be left behind, yes even in a small Group)
So while not all teachers will be capable of this way of teaching, 6 is my own personal sweet spot.
This is where fine-motor technique, tone production, and customized pacing happen the same as in a private lesson and still allow me to tailor feedback to a child’s specific physical development, learning style, and progress without simplifying anything to a common middle ground. All this can still happen while getting the magnificent benefits of group work too, like ensemble skills, rhythmic integrity, group listening, peer motivation, expanded awareness and simply joy.
This truly is the best of both worlds without having to buy two weekly lessons.
They don’t miss out on anything.
And on top of that, it’s a Strum AND sing syllabus so you’re getting foundational singing lessons as well as the instrument…… because singing is a birthright we as society seems to have willingly cast away. We all should be able to connect easily and fluidly through our first instrument; the voice. ALL, not just the ones who call themselves musicians. Yes; All. Connection is what keeps communities together and singing keeps it joyful.
Why we ever stopped singing daily together and instead only put the singers up on a stage and out of normal life beats me. It’s certainly a loss to humanity. I’m aiming to correct that. I really do want everyone to come back to find power through their voices, it’s a bit of a life mission of mine.
That’s not to say we shouldn’t pay good money to those talented well rehearsed musicians making their living creatively uplifting us all through their performances!
Both can live equally true.
Now it is true, the bigger group classes
rarely yield the same technical precision, confidence, or long-term retention as individual lessons……. So that’s why I found the sweet spot for you and for me.
The way that doesn’t keep music making out of reach for most families. The way that doesn’t make music tuition into a privileged only activity.
