From Saint to Wallaby and Waratah Captain – a great day of learning from one of our own!
Old Boy, Wallaby and NSW Waratahs captain Matt Philip recently returned to the College with several of his Waratahs teammates for a Q&A session and training visit with students.
Speaking to around 200 students, Matt reflected on his journey from the College classrooms and rugby fields to the international stage. He spoke candidly about overcoming injuries and setbacks, including not receiving his first professional contract until the age of 23.
Students had plenty of questions, covering everything from favourite boots, pre-game meals and walk-out songs to rugby's biggest rivalries and life as a professional athlete.
Matt also reflected on the people who influenced him during his time at the College, including former Tutor Faith Ling, who remains part of the College staff today, and Old Boy Male Hingano. Matt recalled buying the same canteen snack as Male each day, convinced it might help him follow a similar path to Australian representative honours.
The Waratahs then joined our 1st XV at Brookvale Oval for a training session, giving students a firsthand look at the skill, preparation and professionalism required at the highest level of the game.
