Beyond the Degree 🎓
Where we share the stories, challenges, and wins that highlight the real journeys happening beyond the degree 👏
Today we’re celebrating Hannah Dean, who graduated in 2026 with a Master of Advanced Social Work Practice (by Research) through Charles Sturt University.
Hannah first completed her Bachelor of Social Work in 2011 and spent many years working within the Broken Hill community. Her move into academia through the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health opened her eyes to the broader impact of rural research — how locally informed work can influence policy, strengthen services, and create meaningful change for regional communities. With the encouragement of her Head of School, she embarked on postgraduate study to deepen her research skills while staying connected to social work practice.
Throughout her degree, Hannah loved being challenged to think critically, revisit foundational theory, and explore contemporary, evidence‑informed approaches. A highlight was the exceptional support of her research supervisors and the many academics who guided her along the way. Graduating with a Postgraduate University Medal is something she describes as a “pinch me moment,” reflecting years of perseverance, sacrifice, and the support of those around her.
Studying locally was essential. Balancing work, research, and raising three boys meant that having the CUC in Broken Hill made university feel achievable. Hannah shared that the CUC reduced barriers, provided a space to focus, and offered encouragement at every stage — from navigating course structures and APA referencing to building confidence in academic writing and research skills. The support she received helped her manage the demands of postgraduate study while staying connected to her family and community.
Hannah continues to live and work in Broken Hill, where she values the strong sense of community and the unique opportunities that come with rural practice. She is passionate about contributing to rural health, social work education, and research that strengthens outcomes for regional communities. After a well‑earned break, she plans to progress to a PhD, building on the work she has already begun.
Her advice to regional and rural students is clear and encouraging:
Don’t underestimate what you’re capable of. With the right support, higher education is absolutely possible from rural Australia. Take the first step, ask questions, and remember — you are capable of far more than you think.
