🧠 Meet Professor Hesham El Gamal!

We’re excited to introduce Professor Hesham El Gamal, a distinguished engineer, researcher and academic whose work has made significant contributions to wireless communications, information theory and machine learning.

As Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, Professor El Gamal is passionate about innovation, collaboration and student-centred education. His internationally recognised achievements include being elected a Fellow of IEEE and a National Academy of Inventors Fellow.

We’re thrilled to have him join us and look forward to sharing more about his work and journey! 🚀

What if the Universe isn’t slowing down… but speeding up? 👀

In 1998, Professor Brian Schmidt and his collaborators made a discovery that changed our understanding of the cosmos: the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. 🚀

Their work on distant supernovae revealed evidence for what we now call dark energy, earning Schmidt the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics 🏆

From studying exploding stars billions of light-years away to leading scientific research in Australia, Professor Schmidt’s career is a reminder that some of the biggest discoveries begin with asking unexpected questions. 🔭✨

BIOTech Futures is hosting a free info night on 3 July at Kirrawee Library+ for Year 9–12 students, and their parents and teachers are warmly welcome too.

The evening will cover everything families need to know about entering the 2026 BIOTech Futures Challenge, a global student competition for young people with an idea that could solve a real-world problem. Local biotech experts Kal Glaznig and Keiley Mead will also share their STEM journey and how they see this challenge benefiting the local community.
