Working in youth detention comes with challenges, responsibility, and the opportunity to make a difference.
Today, a representative from the Youth Detention Centre recruitment team visited our Security students to share insights into what the role actually involves.
He explained that while having the skills and industry knowledge is important, having the best intentions for the young people you are working with is at the heart of the role. He shared the importance of empathy and understanding, while also setting boundaries and supporting young people to be independent, responsible members of the community. He also spoke about the ability to adapt and tackle challenging situations and de-escalation skills.
Students also learnt the practical side of the recruitment process, including how to prepare a resume and cover letter, as well as gaining a better understanding of the role, its conditions, and benefits.
Having our students hear real-world perspectives and the realities of security is one of our core values. We are always grateful to have our industry connections take the time to talk to our students.
