Weekly Justice News: 7/6/22
Whilst most of us are busy preparing for our final semester 1 uni exams, we wanted to post a brief reminder - that particularly in Australia - this is something us as students are incredibly lucky to do.
“The U.S. is a global outlier when it comes to gun violence. U.S. government(s) over the years have allowed gun violence to become a human rights crisis. Easy access to fi****ms (whether legal or illegal) is one of the main drivers.” - Amnesty International
Every state has an obligation to create the safest possible environment for each citizen and to uphold our most fundamental and sacred human right - the right to life.
The ongoing worldwide acceptance of senseless acts of violence affects every person around the world who considers themselves a ‘human being’. If you’re not angry by seeing media reports of “just another” public shooting each week (sometimes multiple each day), you should be.
Sandy Hook. Buffalo. Uvalde. Oklahoma. Philadelphia. Michigan. Tennessee.
“A mass shooting is a mass shooting” and ‘thoughts and prayers’ offered on social media are not enough to bring victims back to their families.
“There have been at least 240 mass shootings in America, just this year.” - Philadelphia Police Chief, Danielle Outlaw.
U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (who represented Sandy Hook in Congress) begged “by doing something, we [can] at least stop sending this quiet message of endorsement to these killers whose brains are breaking, who see the highest levels of government doing nothing, shooting after shooting.”
“Over the past two decades, more school-age children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active duty military combined.”
- U.S. President Joe Biden

📚WEEKLY JUSTICE NEWS📚
Life has rules and war is no different. Rules about war exist for many reasons, from reducing unnecessary harm and trauma to protecting non-combatants from danger and reprisal. It is imperative that these rules be followed - where they are broken, or even ‘bent’, the consequences and resulting escalation can be disastrous.
The below ABC article provides the latest insight into the Russia/Ukraine conflict. According to the Ukrainian Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, Russia has launched another rocket attack on Kramatorsk. This has resulted in heavy damage including a huge crater in the middle of the city, and in some cases destruction of buildings, including a school. Thankfully, this latest Russian attack on civilian targets has not caused fatalities. However, attacks such as this have been deemed by some as not only unethical, but also a violation of the rules of war. The Ukrainian Chief of Staff fears that this rocket launch is a sign of further escalation from Russia.
