Yesterday's hands-on multimedia anatomy workshop using skeletons, plasticine, 3D video imagery and movement at StretchFit studio, Function Well Lifestyle hub, Newstead.
Together, we explored how our bodies function, how to visualise and cue movement more effectively, and how a better understanding of anatomy can help us take care of ourselves.
We welcomed both StretchFit clients and movement teachers - and had a jolly good time!

Static Stretching:
What Really Changes?
A plain-English guide to the emerging science of stretching,
followed by the complete open-access research paper.
The study in one minute
This review argues that static stretching is more than simply “lengthening a muscle.” It proposes that stretching acts as a mechanical stimulus across an interconnected
biological system involving muscle, tendon, fascia, nerves, blood vessels, cells and the extracellular matrix.

What Does It Mean to Stretch “Correctly”?
When we talk about stretching correctly, we are really talking about two related—but distinct—things: visual form and physical sensation.
At the beginning of someone’s stretching journey, both are important. If your position does not at least resemble the demonstrated shape, you may not feel a stretch in the target muscles at all. This can be disappointing and confusing, and may also cause you to place unnecessary stress on another part of the body.
However, the way a stretch feels is ultimately more important than the way it looks.
You should generally feel the stretch in the region being targeted—not in an unrelated joint or muscle, and certainly not as sharp pain. As you become more experienced, you develop a clearer understanding of where the sensation should occur. You can then make small adjustments and explore the stretch rather than simply trying to copy a picture.
Interestingly, visual form may temporarily become less important as you make progress. If someone could perform every stretch with “perfect” alignment from the beginning, they would probably already possess very good flexibility. Stiffer people often need to modify the textbook position before they can access the intended muscles comfortably and effectively.
Paradoxically, alignment may become more important again at an advanced level. As flexibility improves and more demanding positions become possible, precise positioning can help increase the challenge and direct the stretch more specifically.
What Is “Correct” Alignment, Anyway?
Correct alignment can mean two things.
First, it can mean making a particular shape in space. Unless we are awarding points for appearance—as we might in gymnastics—this is not especially important by itself.
Second, alignment is informed by anatomy. A well-designed position places tension through particular muscles and tissues, helping deliver the stretch where it is intended. In this sense, form serves a practical purpose: it influences what is being stretched and how the load is distributed.
There is therefore a constant dialogue between alignment and feeling. Neither should be considered in isolation.
We must also acknowledge the considerable grey area. People are looser in some regions and stiffer in others, so the same person may be able to demonstrate “correct form” quite easily in one stretch, but much less so in another. Our ability to reproduce a supposedly correct position is also influenced by muscle attachment sites, limb proportions and bony architecture—all of which vary significantly from one person to another.
Correct stretching is not about forcing every body into an identical shape. It is about using alignment to guide the body while using sensation to determine whether the stretch is actually reaching the right place.
The picture provides a map. Your body provides the feedback.

Hi Folks,
We’ve got a fantastic workshop coming up, and I think you’re going to love this one!
Imagine actually building the muscles onto your own skeleton. 🦴💪
This is a fun, hands-on way to discover how your body really works — where your muscles are, what they do, and how understanding them can help you stretch, exercise and move better.
And there’s something surprisingly therapeutic about learning with your hands rather than sitting through a lecture!
No anatomy knowledge is required. We’re not training to be surgeons — this workshop is all about having fun, getting curious and learning by doing.
We’ll provide everything you need, and we’ll get up and move around too, so you can actually feel and experience some of the anatomy you’re learning.
Whether you’re into Pilates, yoga, fitness, stretching, or you’re simply curious about your own body, you’ll get something out of this.
Places are limited and spots are already filling.
Just reply to this message to reserve your place!
