It’s no secret…Specialists are seen as NCT providers but this is how I made a change. I put the books on the booklist (and no-one objected because the books were under $10 each -that was their only concern -go figure!) and suddenly the parents and leadership saw music as a "real" subject, because the students are writing something (yep! apparently writing is considered the true measure of someone learning-unbelievable, I know!). Teachers and parents can SEE what students are learning, the PLL thinks it's wonderful, I have evidence for assessment other than observations, the program differentiates from beginner to instrumental students, and all of my planning is done! My experience is…You just have to get it on the booklist and suddenly specialist subjects are taken seriously! Still NCT providers, but the subject becomes "validated" with a 5-10 minute writing exercise at the end of the lesson!
