Stay Upright started in Sydney in June 1981, founded by two police rider trainers who thought riders deserved better training than what was on offer. Forty-five years on, we are Australia's largest and oldest motorcycle training provider, delivering accredited licensing and rider development courses across NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT and TAS. Same reason we started.

LAMS stands for the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme. It determines which motorcycles you can legally ride while on your learner or provisional licence.

* Approved motorcycles sit within set power-to-weight and engine capacity limits.
* Each state and territory publishes its own list of approved LAMS motorcycles.
* Always check the current list from your road authority before you buy.

Approved motorcycle lists are published by your own road authority:

* NSW: Transport for NSW
* VIC: VicRoads
* QLD: TMR
* ACT: Access Canberra
* TAS: Transport Tasmania

Not sure whether the bike you have your eye on qualifies? Check the current list before you buy, not after.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our founder, Warwick Schuberg, has passed away.

Warwick started Stay Upright in 1981, at a time when almost no one was teaching riders how to stay safe. What he built has since taught hundreds of thousands of Australians to ride.

He was passionate about what he taught, cheeky and fun, a loving husband and father, and a thoroughly generous good man. He will be missed by everyone lucky enough to have known him.

WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR COURSE

Coming to a motorcycle course and wondering what to wear?

Wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy enclosed shoes that cover your ankles. Your clothing does not need to be motorcycle-specific, but it must be suitable for the course and meet the requirements in your booking confirmation.

A motorcycle, helmet and gloves are supplied for the course, so you don't need to purchase motorcycle gear beforehand.

Please check your course confirmation before attending for the full clothing requirements.

A quick pre ride check can identify a problem before it leaves you stranded or affects your safety.

Before you ride, check:

• Tyre condition, tread and pressure
• Chain tension and whether it requires lubrication
• Headlight, indicators, tail-light and brake lights
• Horn and controls
• Front and rear brakes and brake-pad condition
• Engine oil, brake-fluid and coolant levels
• Fuel level and expected distance between stops

Check your motorcycle's owner's manual for the correct tyre pressures, chain adjustment and fluid-checking procedures.

If something doesn't look or feel right, have it checked before you ride.

RIDE TOGETHER. RIDE WITHIN YOUR LIMITS.

A successful group ride starts with a clear plan.

Before leaving, agree on the route and plan your fuel and rest stops. Nominate a lead rider and tail rider, exchange contact details and make sure everyone knows what to do if the group becomes separated.

Each rider should maintain their own safe road position and a minimum three-second gap from the motorcycle ahead. Avoid riding in a staggered formation and allow every rider the space to respond to hazards.

The lead rider should set a safe and appropriate pace, considering the conditions and the least experienced rider. However, every rider remains responsible for riding within their own limits.

Don't take risks to keep up, the group should have a plan to regroup safely.
