Learning to read starts long before children open their first reader.

When children explore letters, sounds, words and storytelling, they are developing the foundations of literacy.

These experiences help children:

✔ Understand that print carries meaning
✔ Build vocabulary
✔ Develop confidence in communication

Before children learn to write words, they need to develop the strength, coordination and control to hold and use writing tools confidently.

Activities like drawing, tracing, colouring and mark-making help children build:
✔ Fine motor strength
✔ Hand-eye coordination
✔ Pencil control
✔ Concentration and persistence

These foundations make the transition to formal writing at school much smoother and more enjoyable.

My Dream Pet Competition - Where dream pets help real rescues

Inspire your child to draw their dream pet, the quirkier the better! Three winning drawings will be turned into toys and sold in Petbarn stores, with 100% of profits donated to the Petbarn Foundation to support rescue pets across Australia.

How to enter:

1. Draw your dream pet

2. Upload your masterpiece here: https://www.petbarn.com.au/advice/competitions/my-dream-pet-competition

3. The Pet Barn judges will select three winning drawings to become real toys at Petbarn (plus the 3x winners will receive a $500 prezzee gift card)
