⭐️⭐️Last Wednesday night our dedicated team of educators participated in a professional development session with Jennifer Ribarovski where they learnt about two effective communication frameworks. Educators worked in groups to role play scenarios using the frameworks. Thank you to our team for embracing this training and stepping out of their comfort zones. Jennifer has been working with our centre for a few years now and we appreciate the knowledge and expertise she shares with our educators.⭐️⭐️

The Beach Babies and the Seashell children have started to create a “Happy Rock” project.
This project extended from the interest in gardening and creating artwork with natural materials from around the gardens. Parker from seashells decided she wanted to paint with a rock, which then turned into decorating the rock with the paint instead. Juliette discussed with Parker about how lots of people in Bowen used to paint rocks and hide them, calling them “Happy rocks.”
Parker took on this idea and hid her rock without Juliette noticing. She hid it in the garden and excitedly went up to Juliette saying, “okay, now go and find it!”
“I want to make another Happy rock” she said. Then decided it would be a great idea for our friends to all make one.
The children have eagerly begun decorating their own Happy Rocks and discussing where they could hide them around our local community. During group conversations, we explored why they are called "Happy Rocks," and the children are developing an understanding that these small acts of kindness can bring joy to others. Many of the children shared that they hope their mums and dads will discover one, to “make them happy.” Hayley-Ann and Lexington even asked for assistance to paint love hearts on their rocks, adding an extra touch of kindness to their creations.
Some Starfish children started to help with our project. Regan suggested that we make a map so people will be able to find our Happy Rocks!
Willow and Mackenzie suggested some places to hide them, such as the boat ramp, skate park and Queens Beach. The Beach Babies and Seashells created artwork for the different places to go onto our map.
Mackenzie looked at the map and said, “The crosses are missing!” X marks the spot! Mackenzie, Lucia, Milana and Willow helped draw some X’s on the map.
Regan then added the final touch by writing “Happy Rock Map.”
Kidz At The Beach are working with The Resilience Project to “inspire happiness and change lives.” The Happy Rock Project is a perfect way to give happiness to our community and help our children foster deeper connections, helping us experience and share positive emotions. As well as Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) which are the core elements of The Resilience Project.
Together the seashells and beach babies created 97 Happy Rocks to share with Bowen!

⭐️⭐️Reef Guardian Superheroes Excursion🦸‍♂️
Last Tuesday the Starfish Reef Guardians went on an excursion to Queens Beach. In May the starfish children went for a walk on Country to Queens Beach with Uncle Jimmy Gaston and he asked the children if they could care for Queens Beach so the Green Sea Turtles and the Flat Back Turtles can be safe when they come to the beach to lay their eggs.
🚶‍♀️As a team we discussed with children the possibility of walking to Queens Beach so we could go more regularly. The children decided that it was not that far and it would be a good idea to walk. Before we could go we suggested to the children that we would have to develop a risk assessment- together the children came up with a list of possible risks and then solutions to these risks. We made this into a book that we read before we left for our walk. ⚠️
🚶🏽‍♀️After safely making it to the beach the children put on their gloves and grabbed their reef guardian tools to clean the beach. We walked along the beach and it is with much happiness that we can report that we only collected 12 pieces of rubbish. The children have written a letter to Uncle Jimmy to left him know the great news.
🌭We finished the morning off with a sausage sizzle and a play in the park before we walked back to Kidz at the Beach. On our return Mika and her Mum gave us all a special turtle key ring. It is our plan to return to Queens Beach each month to continue to care for the beach and help protect the turtles. 🐢

🌟🌟Our Starfish Reef Guardian Superhero Capes are ready just in time for our Reef Guardian excursion to Queens Beach on Tuesday to clean up the beach and collect items for our seasonal calendar.
🌟Each year the Starfish Reef Guardians sew their own capes and design their own shields for their capes. We discuss as a team that our shields need to tell everyone that we are Reef Guardians because we are not Superman or Batman we have an important job of being Reef Guardian Superheroes 🦸 Our next job is to decide on a colour for our capes - it can not be just any colour everyone has to come up with a reason why they want the capes to be a particular colour to show that we are Reef Guardian Superheroes. Some of our team wanted blue for the ocean, others said rainbow for the coral and others said green for the seagrass. We all voted and the most votes went to Rainbow 🌈

⭐️⭐️Last week our very dedicated team of educators came together to participate in a staff training session to refresh their knowledge about the Reggio Emilia Educational Project. At Kidz at the beach we have been researching this Italian educational pedagogy for over 20 years. The Reggio Emilia approach supports a rich visual arts curriculum enabling children to express their ideas, thoughts and working theories. To empower our educators to guide children’s artistic exploration they need to have a connection with art mediums - during this training session educators modelled clay to create their own self-portraits.⭐️⭐️Thanks Marny for the photos🙏

🌟🌟Starfish Social Agreement –
At Kidz at the Beach we strive to create a culture of agency where children are encouraged to be actively involved in making the decisions that affect them. We have for a few years been working with the Kelly Goodsir concept of ‘Social Agreements’ developing a shared understanding of the expectations rather than creating a list of ‘classroom rules.’ This year in the Starfish room we have been creating a working and a continually evolving ‘Social Agreement’ which is has morphed into new directions and new levels of understanding as we have explored different perspectives through reading and discussing different social skills stories. The books that have helped us to create our social agreement include – the ‘Fill a Bucket’ book, Aunty Faye Muir’s books ‘Sharing’ and ‘Respect’ and ‘The Big Book of Rights.’ We have all contributed to the social agreement book but not everybody could fit on the wall canvas that is in our room to refresh our memories. Everyone’s story is in the book for the children to access at all times and we have hung a copy near the wall canvas for families to read and share in the learning. This project has helped create our Starfish caring and sharing democratic learning community – so proud of the children’s commitment to this project and the depth of critical reflection that evolved during it’s development. 🌟🌟

NAIDOC Week!!
Last week Taneeka helped the children and educators celebrate NAIDOC week firstly she made all the staff some bracelets that demonstrated the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag colours. Then she read some Aboriginal peoples stories including one book which was her favourite childhood story her dad use to read to her. She spoke about the different ways her ancestors' read stories; reading with words, dance, and singing to them. We also learnt how to do different animals with our bodies and tell a story through a dance. Certain dance moves are 'women’s business' and other dance movements are 'men’s business'. We spoke a little about totems and Zani and Taneeka shared with us what are their totems.

🌟🌟Recently Anna attended the Australian Childcare Alliance QLD National Conference in Brisbane where she not only spent time with our favourite mentor Caroline Fewster and but also listened to some amazing presentations. This opportunity was great for networking and making connections to with other passionate early childhood educators. 🌟🌟
