Over the course of two days, four students from Bourke High School—Nico, Archie, Logan, and Jaidyn—were joined by Barran and Minya from Brewarrina Central School for an intensive farm motorbike and quad bike safety workshop. The training was expertly delivered by two TAFE instructors, Heath and Lexi, who travelled from Dubbo to provide hands-on instruction.
The program began with a comprehensive safety induction conducted in the classroom, ensuring all students understood essential safety protocols before moving outdoors to practical training. Each participant was provided with high-quality safety gear, including a full-face motorbike helmet valued at approximately $200, riding gloves, and a high-visibility vest—all of which they were permitted to keep upon completion of the course.
Students learned essential skills such as starting and stopping the machines, conducting pre-start safety checks, and performing basic maintenance. Following this foundational training, they practiced clutch control and manoeuvring techniques before navigating a challenging obstacle course set up using witches’ hats. In the final stage, students were taught how to safely jump over obstacles such as logs and sleepers, further enhancing their riding confidence and skills.
Throughout the workshop, the students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and cooperation, which impressed both Miss Train from Brewarrina Central School and myself. The Brewarrina students were warmly welcomed and integrated seamlessly, no doubt due to the excellent relationships fostered through Clontarf’s efforts in building strong community connections.
Overall, the workshop was an outstanding success, providing valuable safety knowledge and practical experience that will benefit these young riders in their everyday farm tasks. The enthusiasm and skill development exhibited by all the participants were truly commendable.
