Year 3β6 Space β 3D Champions! ππ
Our Year 3β6 students have been busy becoming 3D shape champions! πΊπ¦π
Across our Space learning, students have been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, developing their mathematical vocabulary and learning to describe and classify shapes based on their features.
Students have been getting hands-on with shapes and using important mathematical terminology such as:
Faces β the flat surfaces of a 3D object.
Edges β the lines where two faces meet.
Vertices (vertex) β the points where edges meet.
2D shapes β flat shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles and circles.
3D objects β objects with three dimensions, such as cubes, rectangular prisms, pyramids, cones and cylinders.
The students have been challenged to look closely, investigate, compare and explain what makes different shapes and objects unique. Rather than simply naming a shape, they are learning to justify their thinking using mathematical language β βHow many faces does it have?β, βHow many edges can you find?β and βWhat makes this object different from that one?β
This learning connects directly with the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics β Space, where students develop their understanding of geometric shapes and objects, their features and how they can be described, classified and represented.
Our older students are also building the foundations for more complex spatial reasoning, including visualising and describing objects, recognising relationships between shapes and using mathematical reasoning to solve problems.
It has been fantastic to see our students questioning, investigating, building, comparing and sharing their mathematical thinking. ππ§ β¨
Who knew there was so much to discover in a simple shape? Our Year 3β6 students certainly do now!
