🐑🐐Show Team update - sheep and goat judging!

The last 2 days we have been showing sheep and goats, as well as participating in young judges competitions. With 22 kids across these competitions, it was a very busy couple of days!

We would firstly like to thank Marc and Veronica Carman for their support 👏🏼

After weighing in, the sheep are first judged as a pen of 3, and again this year it was very stiff competition, with over 240 sheep in the shed. After this they were shorn and fleeces valued and judged. Although we are happy with our sheep and our wool, we couldn’t quite get into the ribbons.

Today was a new competition for the sheep, where their scanning results were used in an on-hoof meat comp.

🐑 Well done to Grace and number 25 for coming second in their weight class.

We also entered 2 fleeces from last year’s wethers, winning 🏆 first and second🥈in our zone.

Throughout the day a number of students participated in young judges competitions and we were rewarded with:

This year goats were organised into breeders, any other breed, and boer/cross classes.
Our rangeland goats performed well with students persisting well with them.

🦁🐘🐆Monarto Zoo Excursion🐆🐘🦁

On Friday of Week 7, our Year 7's took an excursion down to Monarto Zoo as part of our biological science units.

Our students had a walking tour with Roger Mills, an ex-Bordertown High School teacher, who explored various animal adaptations and answered all of the students’ questions. They also experienced a guided tour of the park.

Students got a glimpse of various native and exotic animals, such as lions, cheetahs, meerkats, chimpanzees, elephants, and so many more.

Our students jumped at the opportunity to observe these beautiful animals and had a great time with lots of in situ learning taking place.

Thanks to Mr Wells, Mr Mao, Mrs Anderson, Carly and Lexi for making this excursion possible for our students 🌟

🚁Helicopter Competition Winners!

Yesterday the Year 7B class celebrated winning the inaugural helicopter competition by enjoying a shared pizza lunch 🍕

Science classes from Year 7 to 10 competed to create a helicopter that had the longest flight time.

🏆 7B came away the winners, with Harrison and Blake’s helicopter recording a flight time of more than 6 seconds.

Well done to all competitors and congratulations to our winners!

Tatiara Schools Chaplaincy Fundraiser

The Tatiara Schools Chaplaincy group are running a Dance Night Fundraiser on Saturday 12th September. Please support this if you can, our Chaplains are such a vital part of our school and the way we support our young people.

🐮Sunday with the Show Team🐮

Today was our main judging day for our 5 purebred steers. The quality of the cattle in the shed was exceptional, with the judge commenting many times that the bulk of the cattle in the shed would meet spec with their finish.

First out was Wrangler our Murray Grey, led by Ella in lightweight - coming third 🥉

Next up was our Poll Hereford, Winnie the Moo, in the heavy weight class and led by Beth - he won his class 🏅 and came back in for champion, but was unfortunately outpowered.

Our 3 export steers unfortunately landed in the same class with only a few kgs between them.
No ribbons for them today, however Will, Emmy and Ben did a great job with our limousin, Speckle Park and South Devon steers.

We again would like to thank Neil and Yvonne Hagger, Lachy and Lou Day, Geoff and Kate Buick, Emmy and Andrew Finlayson, the Llewellyn family, and Jason Foote. Thank you to the breeders and parents for being at the show supporting our students and steers. A big thank you to Geoff Buick for carting our cattle, and to Andrew Finlayson for helping with pack up, bringing the trailer home and saving us a lot of time.

Carcass presentations will be Wednesday night.

Tomorrow we begin the final preparation for our sheep and goat team, who are heading to the show Tuesday morning.

🗓️What’s on this week at BHS

🐮Saturday with the Show Team

Saturdays at the show include Thomas Foods International (TFI) breed selections, where all animals of the same breed go out in the ring together and the Top 3 are selected.

Days Winnie the Moo (Poll Hereford) was the standout of our team being selected into the Top 3 🥉

Following this was the highly anticipated Grand Parade, a true spectacle. This year half our team went home for sporting finals which left us with a skeleton crew, with Mrs Altus and Mrs McCarthy on the banner. The most nerve wracking of all the competitions, our students were cool, calm, and collected in some very trying conditions.

To round out our Saturday was the first of the steer judging. Our cross bred steer placed fifth in a highly competitive class of cross bred export steers.

Students enjoyed what was left of the night before heading back to the caravan ready for a big day of judging tomorrow.

Thank you to all the families who have visited us and all the wonderful comments. Also a big thank you to parents ferrying students back and forth so they can compete in both their showing and sporting commitments.

📸Show Team update!

After months of growing and prepping our steers we travelled to the show yesterday with 14 eager students.

Big thanks to Geoff Buick for carting our cattle again. Stall set up went smoothly and the cattle have settled in.

Friday morning our steers weighed in well and after the SA Young Beef Breeders education session, three of our students were able to participate in handlers competitions. These competitions focus on the students’ relationship with their animals, their ability to not only control it but show it off in the best possible light to the judges.

This year we selected Chloe, Tayla and Ebony to participate in the novice, intermediate and experienced sections, with the following results:

🥈Chloe placed second in her heat

🌟Tayla was in a highly experienced intermediate class and handled her steer with ease.

🏅Ebony was rewarded with Reserve Champion Experienced handler.

It’s really pleasing to see our whole team work together to prep the animals and encourage the handlers into the ring.
