In Week 3 of this term, the majority of Year 8 History students travelled to the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour to view the Vikings Galloway Hoard Exhibition.

Buried around AD 900 and discovered on a church ground in Scotland in 2014, the Galloway Hoard contains more than five kilograms of silver, gold and other materials. The collection included rare objects and precious heirlooms from early medieval Britain and Ireland, mainland Europe and as far away as Central Asia. The careful way the hoard was buried helped preserve incredibly rare organic materials, including silk and other textiles. This excursion helped provide students with a valuable opportunity to investigate Viking-age artefacts and deepen their understanding of the movement, trade and connections of people during the early medieval period.

It was a great day and it was amazing to see artefacts close up. We even had the opportunity to handle some items from the collection and listen to archaeologists speak about what the hoard has unlocked in our understanding of the Vikings during the height of the Viking age!

HeadStart for Term 3 has commenced today with our future Year 7 students. Today they are experiencing TAS including food technology, design and technology and engineering.

Moving ahead for planning in 2027, we are developing smaller classes which will allow a more successful start for their high school journey. Lots more ahead for transition this year.

When I arrived here in 2015, I brought back the newsletter in printed form and in the last three years we have used Sway to showcase our school. Moving ahead with the changes in social media sharing, this will be our final newsletter in the sway format.

From next week, we will be doing weekly Spotlights to promote the amazing things our students and staff are doing at LMHS and allow for more frequent updates for the school community.
