Language work is hard and long and does not happen overnight, but with the dedication of Language Warriors, like Aunty Coco here and the team surrounding her, long term outcomes for the saving, protecting, caring for and in tun sharing of your language can be achieved and this story is testament to that. Long term investment is always needed for our languages, as well as dedication and love. Congratulations Aunt on this recognition and everyone at Yawuru for their support

🌟 Aunty Coco and the Legacy Behind Australia’s Largest Digitally Documented Language 🌟

Aunty Coco’s dedication to the preservation of Yawuru ngan-ga continues to honour the legacy of our Elders and strengthen the voice of our language for generations to come. 💛🖤❤️

Through countless hours of meticulous work, Aunty Coco has carefully transcribed elders’ recordings with exceptional accuracy. Listening closely to fluent speakers in person and on old tape recordings, she applies the correct orthography and painstakingly conjugates each verb with precision, all 63 forms at a time.

Her devotion has transformed the way our community preserves, accesses, and celebrates our language.

Her commitment to building and refining individual data sets in the Miromaa database has contributed to Yawuru ngan-ga becoming the largest digitally documented language in Australia! This achievement stands on her tireless commitment and the strong foundations laid by Yawuru Elders and language speakers, whose knowledge, voices, and teachings continue to guide this work.

Today, that legacy is carried forward by her and the dedicated team at Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga, who continue to grow, strengthen and share our language with community. Together, this work reflects a deep and shared belief that Yawuru ngan-ga must always be heard, spoken and carried forward.

Thank you immensely, Aunty Coco, and to all our Elders and language workers who continue to protect and grow this precious legacy.

Language Trainee Job in Boolaroo, Newcastle, Maitland & Hunter NSW - SEEK We are seeking a First Nations Australian to support the Awabakal Language Program’s daily operations, learning, and community activities.

Miromaa is recruiting a First Nations Language Trainee to join our Awabakal Language Program on a 6 month, part time contract.
This is a hands on learning role where you will:
🌿 learn and practise Awabakal language with guidance
📚 help create culturally safe language resources
👣 get involved in community language and cultural activities
🧑‍🏫 support workshops and, over time, build toward helping deliver sessions too
If you are community minded, keen to learn, and comfortable engaging with kids through to high school, we would love to hear from you.

Are you a First Nations Australian keen to strengthen culture through language? Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre is looking for a Language Trainee to join our Awabakal Language Program on a 6-month part-time contract.

This role is all about learning Awabakal, building confidence, and helping create culturally strong learning resources. You will also support community language and cultural activities, and with guidance, grow into helping deliver language sessions to others.

✅ You might be a great fit if you:

Feel passionate about language, culture and community

Enjoy learning and sharing knowledge (especially with kids and young people)

Have basic computer skills and a positive, respectful attitude

Are comfortable yarning with groups and in classrooms

Connection to Awabakal Country or community is strongly encouraged (but not required).

📍 Mix of structured and flexible learning hours, with face-to-face training and practical activities in the office and classroom.

An unforgettable evening at The Summit 🌟

This week, the Miromaa team attended the NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce Gala Dinner, a celebration of excellence, connection, and the incredible strength of our Indigenous business community.

We were beyond proud to see Jacqui Allen, our Awabakal Language Program Manager, honoured as a Woman of the Year Finalist. Her leadership and unwavering commitment to language revitalisation continue to inspire us all. 🦋

Another proud moment: the Awabakal Seasonal Calendar was named Runner Up for the Sustainability & Environmental Impact Award! This interactive calendar is a living archive of over 50 plants and animals, thousands of years of cultural knowledge, and contributions from more than 20 Local Community Groups, Elders, and Knowledge Holders.
