Next Tuesday 1st September our local playgroup is hosting an informative session on supporting your child’s transition to school 🏫

💡 Learn practical strategies to build independence and self- help skills, while gaining a better understanding of the transition process, local school options, and enrolment pathways.

Suitable for all Blayney area families, regardless of which school your child will attend.

🥛✨ Science Week At Home - Magic Milk

For our final National Science Week: Science at Home experiment, we’re making colours dance, swirl and move with a little help from milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid! 🌈

🧪 YOU WILL NEED:
🥛 Milk — full cream works best
🎨 Food colouring
🫧 Dishwashing liquid
🤍 Cotton buds
🍽️ A shallow dish or plate

🔬 LET’S INVESTIGATE!
1️⃣ Pour milk into your dish.
2️⃣ Add drops of different food colours around the milk.
3️⃣ Dip a cotton bud into some dishwashing liquid.
4️⃣ Gently touch the cotton bud to the milk… and WATCH! 👀
5️⃣ Try touching different places and see what happens!

✨ The dishwashing liquid interacts with the fats in the milk and changes the surface tension, causing the colours to swirl and move.

💭 ASK YOUR LITTLE SCIENTIST:
What do you think will happen?
Which colours are moving the most?
What happens when you add more soap?
Can you make the colours dance together?

🌋 Science Week At Home - Fizzing Volcano

Today we’re getting a little MESSY! 😆

Let’s make our very own fizzing volcano and investigate what happens when two ingredients react.

🧪 YOU WILL NEED:
• Bicarbonate of soda
• Vinegar
• A small cup or container
• Food colouring (optional)
• A tray or outdoor space

🔬 LET’S INVESTIGATE!
1️⃣ Place your container on a tray or outside.
2️⃣ Add a few spoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda.
3️⃣ Add some food colouring if you’d like colourful “lava”!
4️⃣ Pour in some vinegar… and WATCH!

🌋 FIZZ! BUBBLE! ERUPT!
When bicarbonate of soda and vinegar are mixed, they react and produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas creates all those wonderful bubbles and fizz!

💭 What do you predict will happen?
💭 What do you notice?
💭 Can you hear anything?
💭 What happens if you add more vinegar?

🥚 Science Week At Home - The Floating Egg

Can you make an egg float? 🤔

Today we’re investigating floating, sinking and density!
🧪 YOU WILL NEED:
• 2 glasses or jars
• Water
• Salt
• 2 eggs

🔬 LET’S INVESTIGATE!
1️⃣ Fill both glasses with water.
2️⃣ Carefully place an egg into each glass. What happens?
3️⃣ In one glass, gradually add several spoonfuls of salt and stir well.
4️⃣ Keep adding salt until you notice something different…

👀 Can you make the egg float?

🔍 ASK YOUR CHILD:
💭 Did the egg sink or float?
💭 What happened when we added salt?
💭 Can you think of anything else that floats in water?
💭 What do you predict will happen if we add MORE salt?

🧠 Remember — there doesn’t have to be a “right” answer when we’re investigating. Scientists make predictions, test their ideas and discover what happens!

🌈 Science Week At Home - Walking Water

Today’s experiment is a little bit magical… but there’s some clever science behind it!

💧 YOU WILL NEED:
• 3 clear cups or glasses
• Water
• Food colouring
• Paper towel

🧪 LET’S INVESTIGATE!
1️⃣ Fill the first and third cups with water.
2️⃣ Add a few drops of different food colours to each cup.
3️⃣ Leave the middle cup empty.
4️⃣ Fold paper towel into strips and place one end into each coloured cup and the other end into the empty cup.
5️⃣ Wait and watch!

👀 What can you see happening?

The water will slowly travel up the paper towel and into the empty cup. This is called capillary action — water can move through the tiny spaces in materials!

🔍 ASK YOUR CHILD:
💭 Where do you think the water is going?
💭 What colours will we make when they mix?
💭 Does the water move quickly or slowly?
💭 What do you notice after 10 minutes? What about an hour?

🪴Science Week At Home: Growing Seeds

🌱 You will need:
• A clear glass or jar
• Cotton wool or paper towel
• A few dried beans or peas
• Water

🧪 LET’S INVESTIGATE!
1️⃣ Place some damp cotton wool inside your jar.
2️⃣ Pop a bean or pea between the cotton wool and the side of the jar so you can see it clearly.
3️⃣ Add a little water to keep the cotton wool damp.
4️⃣ Place your jar somewhere with plenty of light.
5️⃣ Check it each day and watch what happens!

🔍 ASK YOUR CHILD:
💭 What do you think will happen to the seed?
💭 What does a seed need to grow?
💭 Which part do you think will appear first — the roots or the shoot?
💭 Can you see any changes tomorrow?

🔬🌱 NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK IS HERE! 🌱🔬

This week at preschool, we’re putting on our scientist hats and diving into a week full of wonder, curiosity, questions and discovery! 🧪👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

National Science Week is a wonderful opportunity to encourage children to wonder “I wonder what will happen if…?”, make predictions, test their ideas, observe what happens and discover that sometimes… things don’t go quite as planned — and that’s OK! 💭✨

Throughout the week, the children will be exploring science through hands-on experiments, sensory experiences, investigations and plenty of messy fun 🌈🌋💧🌱

And we’d love to invite our preschool families to join in at home!

Each day this week, we’ll share a simple science experiment that you can try together at home using everyday materials.

You don’t need fancy equipment or a science lab — just a curious little mind, a few simple ingredients and a willingness to ask:

🔍 What can you see?
🤔 Why do you think that happened?
🌱 What could we try next?

🌳 Schools Tree Day 🌳

On Friday we celebrated Schools Tree Day/ Gardening Day by spending time caring for our preschool garden and talking about the important role trees play in our environment 🌏

The children enjoyed watering our garden and discussing how plants and trees need sunshine, water and care to grow 🪴

Together, we also shared ideas about the new trees we’d like to plant in our garden this Spring and why they’re important for providing shade, attracting birds and insects, and creating beautiful spaces to learn and play 🍃

These conversations and hands-on experiences help children foster a sense of responsibility, respect and connection to the natural world while supporting their understanding of sustainability and how we can all help care for our environment.

🌱 Every small action we take today helps create a greener tomorrow.
