“Would you rather…?” This has been a regular game the children have been doing at Blue Gum lately. We have had some awesome questions posed by the children. Such as: “would you rather stay at home or swim with an axolotl?” “Would you rather meet a dinosaur or a lion?” “Sash, would you rather be at Blue Gum all day or at home all day?” And “would you rather eat worms or pasta?”

These types of questions are a great opportunity to make connections with others, develop critical thinking, build language skills, and for self expression.

To extend on this interest we have been reading “Would You Rather” by John Burningham. One of his questions is “would you rather “jump in nettles, swallow a dead frog, or stay all night in a creepy house?” What would you rather do?

A joy to celebrate the first day of spring at Blue Gum.

Yesterday we voted on whether we should go to the park today. It was a clear win for the park.

Yesterday a child requested that the educator open up the worm farm. “I want to hold a worm.” “Me too.” “Me too.” There ended up being eight children holding worms, chatting to each other about the experience. “It’s tickling me.” “It’s tickling me too.” “My one is a baby.” We talked about what worms need to live and grow. When a child heard that worms like the dark, he cupped his hands over the worm. There was a lot of huddling together to observe the worms and encouragement of friends who were unsure about holding worms.

The children did not want to finish the experience, wanting to continue holding the worms whilst going back to playing in the nature playground. The educator explained that the vegetable garden and worm farm was their home, with the children then deciding to place most of their worms next to the brussel sprouts and leeks. Hopefully this means we’ll get a very healthy crop of them soon!

Through these regular experiences we have at Blue Gum, the children are deepening their connection to nature and each other. We are planning on creating a small temporary worm farm in the room so that the children can extend on their learning about worms.
