Looking through our portfolios gives us the opportunity to reflect on just how far we have come throughout our First Years journey. As we sit with our friends and revisit photographs, artwork, learning stories, and special memories, we begin recognising the many milestones we have achieved along the way. There is so much excitement in remembering experiences we have shared together and noticing how much we have grown, learned, and developed over time. These moments help strengthen our sense of identity and belonging as we celebrate our achievements and the friendships that have been part of our learning journey from the very beginning.

Our sensory dinosaur dig transforms us into archaeologists as we search for hidden dinosaur friends beneath the surface. We dig, sift, and investigate carefully, using our tools to uncover exciting discoveries along the way. Every dinosaur we find encourages new conversations as we compare our discoveries and share what we know about these fascinating creatures. The experience combines sensory exploration with scientific thinking, inviting us to observe, investigate, and discover through hands on learning. There is always a sense of wonder when something hidden is finally revealed.

Music time in our nursery room is full of smiles, movement, and discovery as we use sticks to tap along to the beat. We listen carefully to the rhythm and explore how our movements can match the sounds we hear. Sometimes we tap softly, sometimes we tap loudly, and sometimes we simply enjoy the feeling of making music together. Experiences like this support our listening skills, coordination, concentration, and early understanding of rhythm and pattern. Through music and movement, we strengthen important neural pathways while building confidence to express ourselves in joyful and meaningful ways.

Our counting activity brings together some of our favourite Australian animals and important early maths skills. As we identify, count, and organise the animals, we strengthen our understanding of numbers while connecting with wildlife that is part of our Australian identity. The familiar animals spark curiosity and conversation, making the experience feel engaging and relevant to our everyday learning. By combining numeracy with real world connections, we discover that maths can be found everywhere around us.

Our creative experiences often begin with the natural materials we discover around us. Using leaves, nuts, branches, and other treasures from nature, we dip them into paint and experiment with the different marks they can make on paper. Sometimes we drag them across the page to create long trails of colour, while other times we stamp and tap them down to reveal unique shapes and patterns. Every material leaves a different impression, encouraging us to investigate, compare, and explore through hands on discovery. The combination of nature, sensory exploration, and creativity makes every artwork completely unique, just like the artist creating it.

Our cardboard boxes quickly become whatever we imagine them to be. One moment they are cars travelling to exciting destinations, the next they are spaceships heading off on a mission through outer space. Sometimes we invite our friends to join us as co-pilots, creating stories and adventures together, while other times we use them as clever hiding places before jumping out with a surprise. Experiences like these remind us that creativity doesn't come from toys alone. It comes from our ideas, our conversations, and the freedom to imagine something entirely new.

NAIDOC Week provides the perfect opportunity to explore Australia's incredible Sea Country. Our Ocean Life visitors introduce us to fascinating marine animals that we can observe, learn about, and gently touch. Feeling the different textures of our sea friends makes every discovery even more memorable.

We love developing a greater appreciation for our oceans, the wildlife that calls them home, and the importance of caring for Country and Sea Country together.

There is never a shortage of smiles when our spinny chairs come out. We love experimenting with different ways to move, whether we are balancing carefully, spinning slowly, or seeing how quickly we can twirl around. The excitement is contagious as we watch our friends take their turn, cheering, laughing, and sharing in the experience together. The soft mats underneath help us feel confident to keep exploring movement and taking on new challenges. These playful moments encourage us to develop body awareness, balance, and coordination while having so much fun outdoors.

Our writing table becomes a place of exploration as we use whiteboards and alphabet guides to investigate letters and symbols. We observe the shapes, discuss what we notice, and practise recreating them ourselves, building familiarity with the building blocks of literacy. As we engage in the process, we strengthen our fine motor skills, concentration, and confidence while developing an understanding of how written language works. Experiences like these help us see ourselves as capable learners as we continue our journey towards reading and writing.

Our outdoor BBQ area becomes a place full of imagination, conversation, and connection as we cook up all sorts of delicious creations using real materials. We gather around the BBQ, sharing ideas about what is on the menu and discussing who we might be cooking for. Leaves, sticks, flowers, and other natural materials transform into exciting meals as our creativity takes over. Through role play, we explore familiar experiences from home and our community, building communication skills, confidence, and friendships as we engage in meaningful conversations with one another.
