2021 Sheep Section Results - 2021 saw a fantastic line up of sheep at the Murray Bridge show. Convenor, Michelle Thiele, said she was inspired to see so many young people from the schools enthused about the Sheep Industry and impressed to see the stud entries with 10 breeds represented on the day.
The first classes were the Junior Handler Classes. With the over judge being Michael Lawrence and ring judge being Kayla Starkey.
Year 5 – 1st Anais Keenan, 2nd Maddison McBride. Year 6 1st Lilly Purvis, 2nd William McBride, 3rd Delilah Costeloan, 4th Zara Heath, 5th Marcus Waldhuter. Year 7 – 1st Isla Mickan, 2nd Charlotte Jackson, 3rd Ciara Schulz. Year 8 1st Saje Keenan, 2nd Keira Sanchez, 3rd Anna Simounds. Year 9 1st Larni Grills, 2nd Flynn McGormann, 3rd Liam Joppich. Year 10/11 1st Tahlia Lewis, 2nd Coen Martin, 3rd Max Cormack. Year 12 1st Jorja Gibbons, 2nd Corey Raine, 3rd Sarah Westhome, 4th Tayler Nelson. With Jorja Gibbons being eventually sashed the Champion Junior Handler of the Show in the Final.
The Murraylands School Wether Competition saw a tremendous volume wether from Unity College sashed first place wether in the ring with judge Brett Koehler noting the excellent volume, coverage, crimp definition and brightness of wool. Second Place went to a wether from the team from Roper Road Murray Bridge High School with a great correct wether with excellent wool. Third prize went to a wonderfully correct wether from Unity College which just lacked the volume of the top two wethers. The Wether from Unity College went on to be sashed the heaviest wether in the section boasting a 102.5kg liveweight. Finest Wether sash went to a wether from Tyndale Christian College with a wether that had a wool test of 16.3micron. All in all we saw 27 wethers from the school compete and all the students had a wonderful time.

Polwarth – Ram over 18 months in the wool 1st Birdwood High School, Ram under 18 months 1st Birdwood High School, 2nd Birdwood High School, 3rd Birdwood High School.
Romney – Ram over 18 months in the wool 1st LC & HB Brewer 2nd LC & HB Brewer, Ram under 18 months short wool 1st H Wright 2nd H Wright, Ewe over 18 months in the wool 1st LC & HB Brewer 2nd LC & HB Brewer, Ewe under 18 months short wool 1st H Wright 2nd H Wright, Breeders Group 1st H Wright 2nd LC & HB Brewer. Champion Romney went to H Wright with her ram under 18 months short wool and Champion Romney Ewe went to H Wright with her ewe under 18 months short wool.
Border Leicester – Ram over 18 months in the wool 1st H Wright 2nd H Wright, Ram under 18 months short wool 1st H Wright. Ewe under 18 months short wool 1st H Wright 2nd H Wright. Breeders Group H Wright. Champion Border Leicester Ram went to H Wright with her ram over 18 months in the wool and Champion Border Leicester Ewe went to H Wright with her ewe under 18 months short wool.
SAMM – Ram over 18 months in the wool 1st G Tynan 2nd G Tynan, Ram Lamb 1st G Tynan 2nd G Tynan, Ewe Lamb 1st G Tynan 2nd G Tynan, Breeders Group – G Tynan. Champion SAMM Ram went to G Tynan with his Ram Lamb and Champion Ewe went to G Tynan with his Ewe Lamb.
Grand Champion Maternal Ram was awarded to H Wright for her Border Leicester Ram and Grand Champion Maternal Ewe was awarded to H Wright for her Border Leicester Ewe.
Texel – Ram 2 tooth & under July – September Drop 1st Imperial Partners, Ewe 2 tooth & under April – June Drop 1st Imperial Partners, Ewe 2 tooth & under July – September Drop 1st Imperial Partners 2nd Imperial Partners. Champion Texel Ram went to Imperial Partners with their July-September Drop 2 tooth Ram and Champion Texel Ewe went to Imperial Partners with their Ewe 2 tooth & under April-June Drop
Dorpers – Pair of Rams 2 tooth & under 1st Brummy’s Blacks, Ram Lamb April-June Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks 2nd Brummy’s Blacks, Ram Lamb July-September Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks, Ewe 2 tooth & under April-June Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks, 2nd Brummy’s Blacks, Ewe 2 tooth & under July-September Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks, 2nd Brummy’s Blacks, Ewe Lamb April-June Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks 2nd Brummy’s Blacks Ewe Lamb July-September Drop 1st Brummy’s Blacks 2nd Brummy’s Blacks Breeders Group 1st Brummy’s Blacks. Champion Dorper Ram was awarded to Brummy’s Blacks with their Ram Lamb April-June Drop and Champion Dorper Ewe was awarded to Brummy’s Blacks with their 2 tooth Ewe April-June Drop
Grand Champion Prime Ram was awarded to the Imperial Partners Texel Ram 2 tooth and under July-September Drop and Grand Champion Prime Ewe was awarded to Imperial Partners Texel Ewe 2 tooth & under April-June Drop.
After and exciting competition Supreme Interbreed Ram was awarded to the Border Leicester Ram from H Wright and Supreme Interbreed Ewe was awarded to the Border Leicester Ewe from H Wright. Supreme Interbreed Group was awarded to H Wright with her Border Leicester Breeders Group.
Dual Purpose/Maternal Breeds Judge Michael Osborne said it was fantastic to see such a great line up of sheep and exciting to see the young people turning out in their droves for the competitions. Prime/Meat Breeds Judge Kayla Starkey also noted the excellent quality of the sheep on show and was a fantastic help with the Junior Handler Classes.
Michael Lawrence was invited to judge the Commercial Sheep entries where he awarded a First place to the Dohne entry from B & S Erickson with G Tynans Merino x SAMM ewes being awarded second place. The Thiele family was awarded 1st place in the Merino Wether class with Champion Commercial Exhibit being awarded to the Dohne ewes from B&S Ericksons at Burdett.
Convenor, Michelle Thiele thanked the major Sponsors of the event - Mt Compass Feeds who assisted in the School classes with bags of feed mix and information sheets to facilitate students engage with the sheep industry on a nutritional basis, Paramount Browns for goods, Transaustralia Transport for support in the ribbons, Galaxy Park for support with the Maternal Grand Champion, Daish Fodder & Irrigation, Greg Tynan - Jon Del SAMMs' for support with the Maternal Young Judges, Radnor Merinos & Poll Merinos for support in the Supreme Interbreed Group, River Murray Trading Post & Nutrien Ag Solutions.
Convenor M Thiele thanked all who attended and those involved behind the scenes for making it a fantastic day and looked forward to seeing the section grow even further in 2022.
