"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together" - Vincent Van Gogh

For many students, March brings the first significant assessment tasks of the year. These early results often set the tone academically and psychologically.

At this stage, our tutors are working with students to:

- Break larger tasks into manageable checkpoints
- Analyse task verbs and marking criteria carefully
- Develop structured responses for extended writing tasks
- Practise exam-style questions under timed conditions
- Review and apply feedback from earlier classwork

If your child has received their first assessment notification and would like structured preparation support, this is an ideal time to reach out.

We encourage students and their caregivers to bring their assessment task notifications to their weekly tutoring sessions so their tutor can review them and answer any questions the student may have. If you would prefer to email it, please send it to [email protected] with your student's name and their tutor in the subject line, and we can forward it on!

Good luck to all students sitting NAPLAN over the coming days! ✏️📚

NAPLAN can feel like a big event, but it’s really just a snapshot of the skills students have been developing in the classroom. The most important things are to get a good night’s sleep, have a healthy breakfast, and take the time to read each question carefully.

To all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 – do your best, stay calm, and remember that one test does not define your abilities or potential.

We’re wishing everyone confidence and success during the testing period!

"From little things, big things grow." - Kev Carmody & Paul Kelly

By mid to late February, the initial excitement of the new school year has usually passed, and routines begin to matter more than motivation alone. The most successful students are not necessarily those who rush ahead, but those who take the time to build consistency early.

Helpful focus points at this stage include:
- Maintaining regular sleep and wake routines on school nights
- Establishing a predictable homework or study window during the week
- Encouraging students to ask questions as soon as confusion arises
- Reviewing feedback from early classwork and assessments

Small, steady habits formed now often prevent stress and overload later in the term.

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL NEXT WEEK 📚

With NSW schools returning this week, the start of the year can feel exciting, overwhelming, or a mix of both — for students and parents.

The first few weeks back are less about academic pressure and more about:
- Re-establishing routines
- Settling into new expectations and subjects
- Building confidence after the summer break

It’s very normal for students to feel a little rusty or tired as they adjust back to school life. In our experience, a calm start — consistent sleep, steady homework habits, and realistic expectations — sets students up far better than trying to “rush ahead”.

Progress early in the year is about momentum, not perfection.

✍️ NAPLAN is Approaching! 🖥️

In 2026, NAPLAN testing will take place between 11 to 23 March.

For many students, it can feel bigger and more stressful than it needs to be.

It’s worth remembering that NAPLAN is designed to provide a snapshot of literacy and numeracy skills at a point in time — not a judgement of a child’s intelligence, effort, or future potential.

In our experience, the students who cope best tend to:
- Stick to normal routines (sleep, food, school attendance)
- Focus on clear reading and calm working rather than speed
- Feel reassured that one test does not define them

A steady approach and a calm message from adults often make the biggest difference.

With this in mind, Apex Tutoring offers bespoke 1-on-1 NAPLAN readiness sessions to help students understand what the tests require of them and reduce exam-related stress. For more information, check out our website: https://www.apextutoring.com.au/services/school-holiday-programs/

"It always seems impossible until it is done." - Nelson Mandela

The start of the school year is about settling in, not sprinting. The most successful Term 1s usually begin with a focus on routine and confidence rather than immediate academic pressure.

Here are our tips for a successful return to Term 1:
- Re-establish consistent sleep and wake times in the first week or two
- Set aside a regular, low-stress homework or study time (even if there’s not much set yet)
- Encourage students to ask questions early and flag anything they don’t understand
- Treat the first couple of weeks as an adjustment period — learning expectations is part of the work

It’s very normal for things to feel uneven at the start. Once routines are in place, progress tends to follow naturally.
