Week Summary: Child Protection

Hi families,

This week at BVPS OOSH we recognised Child Protection Week. Child safety and wellbeing is at the core of our service, so throughout the week we focused on helping children understand their rights, trusted adults, safe spaces and what to do when something doesn’t feel right.

Children participated in group discussions and games including Traffic Lights, where they identified scenarios as safe, unsure or dangerous, and Stop, Go, Tell, where they practised saying no, moving somewhere safe and telling a trusted adult. We also completed a Know Your Rights quiz and discussed who children can trust and talk to.

Thursday was R U OK? Day, so we held an emotional check-in and gave children the opportunity to share how they were feeling. Children also completed My Safe Flower and child voice surveys about how they feel at OOSH and ways we can improve our service.

We have also created a new Calm Corner with emotional check-in resources, giving children a quiet space to recognise and understand their emotions, regulate and reset when needed.

Our craft activities included 3D safe spaces, My Voice Matters megaphones, trusted person keychains and R U OK? bracelets. F.A was particularly engaged in creating a cosy safe space, making little pillows and blankets from felt and pipe cleaners. For STEM, children built safe spaces with LEGO, created marble runs and brought back the much-requested paper cup challenge.

Outside, children enjoyed Capture the Flag, skipping, touch football, relays and a kids vs educators pool table challenge. We also have some exciting news! After lots of requests, particularly from J.B, we have purchased an OzTag kit for OOSH and can’t wait to put it to use!

Next week is Zero Waste Week! We will begin creating our OOSH vegetable garden, conduct clean-ups around the school and explore different ways we can reduce waste through craft, environmental activities and group discussions.

Week Summary - Spring Into OOSH

Hi families,

This week our topic was Spring into OOSH! With the warmer weather starting to arrive, we enjoyed lots of spring-themed activities, along with some special Father’s Day activities ahead of this weekend.

For craft, children painted with natural materials, decorated their own flower pots, created spring clay designs and made Father’s Day keychains, bookmarks and cards. A special mention to Charlotte D.J, who created a very cool abstract tree with clay to represent spring coming!

For STEM, children baked chocolate chip raspberry muffins, made slime, created marble runs and built their own bird nests using natural materials.

For literacy and numeracy, children wrote and drew about what they would like to do this spring and their favourite things about the season. During group time, we discussed signs of spring, with George E saying flowers begin to grow, Harry K noticing more animals start to appear and Zac B sharing that the ocean’s temperature starts to rise. We loved hearing everyone’s different ideas!

Outside, children made the most of the warmer weather with touch football, Bull Rush, soccer, OzTag, frisbee throwing and dancing on the basketball court.

Next week we will be recognising Child Protection Week, as well as R U OK? Day on Thursday 10 September. Children will engage in a range of themed craft, STEM, environmental, literacy and numeracy, and physical activities, with a focus on safety, wellbeing, trusted people, kindness and looking out for ourselves and others.

We hope all of our BVPS OOSH dads, grandfathers and special people have a wonderful Father’s Day this weekend!

Week Summary - Book Week

Hi families,

This week was Book Week, and what a fun week we had! Yesterday was definitely a highlight, with our educators dressing up alongside the children and getting to see all of their amazing costumes.

Throughout the week, our craft activities included designing book covers, creating characters with clay, making bookmarks, designing our own characters, painting favourite book characters and plenty of character colouring ins.

STEM was also a big hit, with children making paper cup phones, taking on a Rapunzel tower challenge to see how tall they could build, and completing a Three Little Pigs building challenge to test which structure was the strongest.

For literacy and numeracy, children created their own stories using three selected pictures as inspiration and had the opportunity to create their own short stories and books. During group time, we also had some great discussions about favourite breakfast, afternoon tea and supper ideas, as well as getting the children’s thoughts and ideas on our newly released Vacation Care program.

Yesterday’s dress-up day was definitely one to remember! We held our very own OOSH fashion show across the Cool Zone stage, giving children the chance to show off their costumes. We also played Guess the Character during group time, where children stood up and selected someone to guess who they were dressed as. The kids especially loved finding others dressed as the same characters, including our ninjas and Spider-Mans!

We also held an OOSH vote, where children attending both the morning and afternoon sessions could vote for their favourite costume. Congratulations to Maggie W, who was our Book Week costume winner! Maggie received a little prize bag for her amazing Not-So-Perfect Princess costume. Well done, Maggie!

Outside was another busy week, with children and educators enjoying soccer, skipping, egg-and-spoon races, the beep test, Sn**ch, Bull Rush and timed races around the oval.

To finish off the week, this afternoon we will be completing an OOSH clean-up to encourage children to care for their surrounding environment. Children will also have the opportunity to create nature bookmarks using natural materials they find around us.

Next week our topic is Spring into OOSH! With spring officially beginning on the 1st and the warmer weather arriving, we are looking forward to lots more outdoor experiences, planting and environmental activities, and of course plenty of spring crafts. We are also hoping to start creating our very own OOSH garden/vegetable patch on the back veranda, and we can’t wait to get the children’s ideas and help with bringing it to life!

We have some exciting news to share with our BVPS OOSH community! 💛

We are very pleased to announce that Tara has officially stepped into the role of Assistant Director & Educational Leader at BVPS OOSH. 🎉

Tara has been a valued member of our team and has already played an important role in supporting our children, families and educators. Her dedication to our service, strong relationships with the children and families, and commitment to providing quality care make her a wonderful fit for this role.

In her new position, Tara will work closely alongside me in the day-to-day running of the service, while also leading and supporting our educational program and educator practices.

Please join us in congratulating Tara on her new role! We are very excited to see her continue to grow within BVPS OOSH and take on this next chapter. 💐

SPRING VACATION CARE PROGRAM IS HERE! 🎉

Hi Families,

Our September/October Vacation Care Program is officially HERE and bookings are now open! Bookings can be made directly through your OWNA Parent Portal.

Please note: Your OOSH account must be paid and up to date before Vacation Care bookings can be made. If you have outstanding fees, please ensure these are paid in full so you are able to book your required days.

We have an amazing program planned these holidays, packed with exciting excursions, incursions and plenty of fun at OOSH!

All required Risk Assessment forms for excursions and incursions are now available. Days requiring a form are highlighted in red on the program.

Risk Assessment forms can be found in your OWNA Parent App by selecting the three lines in the top-left corner → Forms. These forms must be completed before your child attends on the relevant day. Please ensure you complete a form for each applicable excursion or incursion your child is booked to attend.

Some excursions also require a separate waiver from the venue. These are clearly marked on the program with a “Waiver Link” — simply click the link directly on the program to complete it. These waivers are required by the facilities we are attending, and children will not be permitted to participate if the required waiver has not been completed prior to arrival.

We can’t wait to share another wonderful Vacation Care with everyone! We’re super excited about the program we have planned and can’t wait to hear what you and your children think.

Weekly Summary: Bullying No Way Week

Hi families,

This week at BVPS OOSH we recognised Bullying No Way Week, focusing on this year's theme, "Small Acts, Big Impact." Throughout the week we spoke about kindness, inclusion, respectful friendships and how even the smallest actions can make someone feel safe and valued at OOSH.

Our craft activities included designing anti-bullying superheroes, friendship and kindness bracelets, kindness golf ball decorating, and creating Stop Bullying and Kindness badges. We also worked together to create our very own OOSH kindness poster. Children added their own kindness and anti-bullying messages and decorated the poster to show their creativity and individuality. We loved the finished product so much that it was displayed on our Smart Board throughout the week!

During group time, we had some really great conversations about the different forms of bullying, how we can recognise bullying and what we can do if we see it happening. Children were given different scenarios and asked what they would do, with responses such as telling an educator or teacher and supporting the person involved. We also asked children to share a time this week when they had shown someone an act of kindness or when someone had been kind to them. It was lovely hearing their responses and seeing how much kindness already happens within our OOSH community.

STEM was a massive hit this week! Our paper cup building challenge quickly became a favourite and was requested all week in both Before and After School Care. We saw some amazing creations, including C.M building a house, F.P spelling his name, and E.M and E.F challenging themselves to build the tallest towers. We also completed a spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge, where children tested their problem-solving skills to create strong structures that wouldn't fall over.

Outside, soccer was once again a regular occurrence throughout the week, with handball and Bull Rush also becoming favourite afternoon activities. It has been great seeing so many children getting outside, staying active and enjoying these games together.

Next week is Book Week and we are super excited! We have lots of activities planned around books, storytelling and children's favourite characters, and we can't wait to see everyone dressed up for the Book Week parade on Wednesday.

BVPS OOSH Topic of the Week: Character Week

Hi families,

This week at BVPS OOSH was Character Week, with a different character theme each day! It was such a fun week and we loved seeing the children get involved in activities based around some of their favourite characters.

Throughout the week, children enjoyed lots of creative and STEM activities including themed colouring in, Inside Out emotion stress balls, marble runs, paper plate Minions, modelling clay creatures, creating and naming their own fish, designing paper plate mushrooms and Mario characters, Mario comic strips, and even creating their own new Toy Story characters. We also continued our popular word searches with a different one to match each day’s theme.

Our physical activities were another big hit. Children enjoyed Capture the Flag, Stick in the Mud, soccer and lots of skipping throughout the week. We love seeing the children requesting activities they enjoy and getting their friends and educators involved too.

We also asked some of the children about their favourite day from Character Week. E.W chose Minions, C.R chose Mario, and A.B chose Inside Out. We also asked for suggestions for future Character Days, with E.F suggesting both Sonic and SpongeBob. We love hearing the children’s ideas and using their suggestions to help shape future activities and themes at OOSH.

This afternoon, we are finishing the week with Toy Story, where we will be focusing on friendship and the message “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” Children will have the opportunity to create their own Toy Story characters before watching Toy Story together for a relaxing end to a very busy and fun Character Week, with, of course, popcorn.

Additionally, last Friday we had a lovely OOSH parent who works with WIRES provide us with a wonderful opportunity by volunteering their time to come in and run a session with the children. The children learnt about Australian wildlife and created their own wildlife road signs to encourage drivers to slow down and look out for our native animals. We are extremely grateful for opportunities like this that allow our children to learn more about caring for our environment while connecting with members of our community.

Next week is Bullying No Way Week (17–21 August), with the 2026 theme “Small Acts, Big Impact”. Throughout the week we will focus on inclusion, kindness, speaking up, respect and making sure everyone at BVPS OOSH feels safe and valued. Children will participate in a range of creative, STEM, literacy and numeracy, environmental and physical activities, along with group discussions about how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference to someone else’s day.

Topic of the Week: Under The Sea

Hi families,

This week we brought back our Under the Sea theme after many requests from the children, and it was another huge success!

Throughout the week, children enjoyed a range of creative experiences including clay modelling sea creatures, paper plate ocean dioramas, sponge coral reef painting on canvases and easels, paper plate sea creatures, and octopus toilet roll craft. The clay modelling was by far the favourite activity, with many children requesting it every morning and afternoon. We loved seeing the creativity and effort that went into each creation, so we'll definitely be bringing it back again next week.

Our STEM experiences were also a big hit, especially making stress balls. Anything involving balloons was extremely popular! Many children also continued playing with the slime they made last Monday, which was great to see and showed they were taking ownership of the activities they had created.

It has been wonderful watching the children become more independent by suggesting activities, requesting their favourites, and creating their own games. We also continued with word searches and memory games, which have been popular for children wanting some quieter indoor activities during the colder weather.

Our weekly colouring competition also continued this week. Congratulations to Evelyn Sh and Evelyn St, who were our winners! Great job girls! Your amazing artwork will be displayed on our sign-in wall next week and attached to this post. There is also a prize waiting for both of you to collect next time you're at OOSH.

Outside, handball was by far the most popular game this week, with many children even bringing their own handballs from home to play with their friends. Soccer was also a favourite, with the children excited to be back playing on the grass after the recent wet weather. We have also noticed a big increase in children requesting skipping, so we are currently in the process of purchasing more skipping ropes for everyone to enjoy.

The pool table continues to be one of our busiest areas, and another space that has really stood out this week is our LEGO area. We've noticed that many children head straight there after school, and it has been a fantastic way for them to regulate, settle into OOSH, and connect with their friends.

This week we also practised our lockdown and evacuation drills. At BVPS OOSH, the safety of our children is always our highest priority, and we will continue practising these procedures next week to ensure all of our morning and afternoon attendees have the opportunity to participate.

Next week we will be celebrating Keep Australia Beautiful Week, along with National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day on Tuesday 4 August. On Tuesday, the children will take part in a yarning circle where we will discuss the significance of National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, review and implement our BVPS OOSH Acknowledgement of Country, and complete a range of creative, environmental and hands-on activities that educate and immerse the children in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures while encouraging them to care for Country.

We can't wait for another fun-filled week at BVPS OOSH.

OOSH Educator Day

On Wednesday we celebrated OOSH Educators' Day, and what a lovely afternoon it was!

The children enjoyed Domino's pizza for afternoon tea, face painting, nail art, and some fun outdoor games including giant Jenga, wooden bowling and Yahtzee. It was great seeing everyone having so much fun together.

A huge thank you to the BVPS P&C Association for surprising all of our educators with our own Owala water bottles. We were honestly so surprised and are incredibly grateful for such a thoughtful gift. Thank you for always supporting our team.

A special mention also goes to Charlotte D.J and Kelsie W-B, who helped hand out the surprise water bottles to all of the educators. They did an amazing job keeping it a secret, and the staff had no idea what was coming!

To our amazing educators, thank you for everything you do. Over the past few months, you've put so much time and effort into improving our program, especially Vacation Care, while continuing to make OOSH a place where children feel welcome, safe, supported and, most importantly, have fun.

There is nothing better than seeing children walk through the gate each afternoon excited to be here. Watching the friendships, confidence and sense of community continue to grow reminds us why we love what we do.

Thank you again to our educators, families, children and the BVPS P&C for making BVPS OOSH such a special place. We can't wait to continue making more memories with you all.
