This NAIDOC week, it is important to acknowledge the unique challenges that First Nations people with disabilities face.

The disability community must work to ensure that our events and spaces are safe for First Nations people and educate ourselves on First Nations’ history and culture.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the First Nations people and organisations who created the materials that I used to create this post. I would specifically like to highlight the First Peoples Disability Network and their work and advocacy, including in the creation of the Disability Sector Strengthening Plan, the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with disability and other resources.

Disability Pride Month is about so much more than being proud to have a disability.

It is about acknowledging and celebrating the disability activists that fought for our rights. It is a reminder that the disability community is powerful and can create change.

If you want to learn more about these events and the disability rights movement as a whole, I highly recommend Crip Camp.

Crip Camp is essential viewing for every disabled person and it’s available on Youtube and Netflix.

RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY
If you are a young person with disability in Perth (WA) and are passionate about making consent education safer, clearer, and more accessible for disabled young people, I’d love to hear from you.
We are inviting young people with disability in Perth (WA) to join the Youth Disability Advisory Committee for my PhD project on accessible consent education for 12–16‑year‑olds.
We’re looking for committee members who:
• are 12–25 years old and able to travel to Curtin University
• identify as a person with disability, including those who prefer: audio options, low‑text materials, visual supports, Easy English, or non‑speaking communication
• are comfortable talking about consent
• non‑speaking people or those who use AAC are very welcome.
You will help shape the research and ethics process to ensure the project can build resources, ideas, and teaching approaches that genuinely work for disabled young people.

Hi everybody!

Apologies for my extremely overdue introduction.

My name is Mia (she/her) and I am the Accessibility Officer for the Curtin Student Guild for 2026.

I am currently in my second year of my Psychology degree. I have multiple disabilities and I wear the Sunflower lanyard. I am very chatty, always on the move and extremely passionate about everything related to disability. If you see me around campus, please say hi and introduce yourself.

My job as the Accessibility Officer is to help students with disabilities. This means that when you have issues with your disability at Curtin, please reach out to me. I can advocate for you and connect you with people who can help you. You do not have to deal with accessibility issues alone.

Most of the time, unless a student has told me I do not know about accessibility issues at Curtin. I cannot go to every building on campus or attend every unit, therefore I rely on other students with disabilities to tell me what is going on. Please tell me if you have issues even if you do not need my assistance as you are likely not the only student with that issue.

The best way to get involved is to join the Accessibility Collective. The more people that join the better so we can have a range of perspectives and experiences that cover all areas at Curtin.

The best way to contact me is through email at [email protected]. I can respond via email, or we can set up a meeting. If you want to say hi, I am usually at Chronically Crafty at the Curtin Gallery on the first Wednesday of every month.
