The first round of scholarships for the QLD It Takes a Spark STEM conference closes this Wednesday. The programme is amazing and Engineers Australia has come on board to support young people from low SES, rural and regional environments to attend! Even better, Grace Lutheran College is providing buses to schools in nearby areas so you won't even have bus costs. Better get in quick! https://spark-educonferences.com.au/spark-scholarship-application/

I am now taking inquiries and bookings for 2026 for schools interested in upskilling their emerging and middle leaders. Building the capacity of your middle leaders not only makes a difference to the effectiveness of your school in achieving its desired outcomes but we have found that it improves staff wellbeing and ability to enact change initiatives. Feel free to drop me a line of contact to find out more or get references from schools I have worked with!

Great to see that Andrew Augerinos and the AEU's Professional Learning Centre being shared in this article. I've been partnering Keysborough Secondary College all year providing workshops for the Middle Leaders program and coaching in the Enhanced Leadership program. This school is a remarkable demonstration of how coaching and leadership development is making a huge difference to the lives of the staff and the students. I love doing this work as it fulfills my passion of empowering and enabling people for generations to come!

LOUISE SWINN speaks to principal class members who have used the AEU’s Professional Learning Centre to meet the specific needs of their staff, with great success.

Led a fabulous session for a school leadership team last Friday. The day was an opportunity for the new leadership team to create the year and define what structures, processes and practices they will take on to keep their BIG WHY - their moral purpose - alive and real for themselves across the year. What we know is that effective schools are clear about their moral purpose , they create safe, trusting and empowering environments for everyone, and they develop and empowering their staff collectively and individually at their point of need. This is what they created together. What an awesome day of conversation and planning!

I think it is important to challenge and question what is the purpose of the education provided in schools. Do our systems, structures and practices actually achieve the goals we want? If are young people are only literate and numerate as an end goal then we have failed.

After reflecting on what I did and didn't accomplish in 2024 against my vision of making a difference to how schools develop learning for their students, a thought sideswiped me. If schools (school leadership, teachers, staff, students, parents, etc) do not have a big picture empowering purpose for what learning at the school is FOR, then they will not be developing young people to be empowered and enabled in this challenging time of change. All the wonderful things they DO in schools won't make the difference if the context and associated structures are out.

It took me 3 years from start to end iterating through all of the design phases to write this book. There were times I nearly gave up or I had to walk away as I struggled with how I could connect all the pieces of my thinking together. In many ways this book is about designing great learning and not STEM. Find out more and even download a sample chapter at https://intuyuconsulting.com.au/igniting-stem-learning/

I've noticed the last couple of years, since the pandemic, that schools have been slow to invest in their middle leaders and even cut back on professional development due to a range of constraints (including the challenge of finding teacher coverage). Yet now, more than ever, developing and empowering emerging and middle leaders is something all schools need to be doing. Without a culture of developing leaders and having a TEAM working together to achieve the school's vision then all the school is doing is surviving. This inevitably leads to teacher burnout and long term dissatisfaction.
