📚 Okay, I have a confession to make.

I've been quietly running a blog for a while now, packed with German learning tips, grammar breakdowns, exam prep advice, and the occasional story from life as a language teacher and mum raising kids in Sydney.

Sankt Martin – A Beautiful German Tradition

Lanterns, songs, bonfires, and a story of generosity - Sankt Martin is one of the most heartwarming traditions in Germany.

On 11 November, children walk through the streets with glowing lanterns, singing songs that have been cherished for generations.

The celebration honours Saint Martin’s act of compassion and brings entire communities together every year.

I also love teaching this tradition in my German classes, not just because it’s beautiful, but because it shows my students that language is more than vocabulary and grammar. It’s culture, stories, and the values behind the words. And every year, my learners (from little ones to adults!) enjoy discovering the meaning behind Sankt Martin.

Our daughter is now a Year 12 school captain.

She arrived in Australia at six, without a word of English - standing between two cultures, two worlds, and two languages.

Now she leads with confidence, kindness, and a growing passion for teaching - giving back to the German-background kids in our classes the same support she once needed herself as a little girl learning English.

From learning her first English words in Kindy Term 4 to representing her school in Year 12, this moment feels truly full circle. Watching her step into this role shows how languages, confidence, and identity grow together.

And her journey reminds me of something I teach every day:
Languages carry us.

They open doors, build bridges, and help us become who we are meant to be.

Last month, A Woman’s Eye, Her Art by Drusilla Modjeska was published and it still feels surreal to see it out in the world.

I helped with the German translation and research for the Clara Westhoff-Rilke chapter, spending weeks reading her letters, biographies, and archival notes. It became so much more than a translation job. I really felt like I was stepping into her world, her studios, her friendships, her struggles and courage as a woman artist.

It was an honour to be part of this project and to work with an author as inspiring as Drusilla.

When we first moved to Australia, we kept spotting familiar cars, we had no idea these two brands shared such a long history under GM.

And also, turns out, the same car can mean something totally different on the other side of the world 🇩🇪➡️🇦🇺

✨ Ever feel like you’re reading German but not really learning it?

📚Reading aloud changes everything: it slows you down, helps you remember vocabulary, and even trains your mouth for tricky pronunciations.

🧠 Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that reading aloud engages multiple brain areas simultaneously:
👀 Visual cortex – sees the words
🗣️ Motor cortex – coordinates speaking
👂 Auditory cortex – hears your own voice

This “triple activation” strengthens memory and makes it easier to recall words later, boosting your confidence when speaking.

When we moved to Australia, I quickly realised school here works very differently than in Germany.

From “Kindy” confusion and the rule “No hat, no play”; “NAPLAN,” “P&C,” “HSC”, "IB", the uniforms, the assemblies, the lunchboxes — there were quite a few things that surprised us as parents.
