THE TRANSFIGURATION August 6
"This is my Son, the Beloved ... Listen to him."

(From Matthew 17:1-9, Gospel for today)

Stand up, do not be afraid.

These are the first words Jesus speaks after his transfiguration on the mountaintop. As the Gospel of Matthew recounts, the apostles Peter, James and John are overwhelmed when he appears. They fall on their faces, terrified by the radiant, otherworldly sight before them.

It is such a human reaction. When we encounter something bigger than ourselves, our instinct is often to shrink back, to hide, to feel unworthy.

But Jesus doesn’t leave them there. He walks over, touches them and says: ‘Stand up, do not be afraid’ (Matthew 17:7).

He doesn't want us to cower from his glory. He wants us to see it, pursue it, and ultimately, enjoy it. The Transfiguration is a sneak peek of what we were always made for: the beatific vision – the face of God, unveiled, in all his beauty.

The Canaanite woman is well worth keeping our eye on here, for she was batting on a very sticky wicket and appeared to have little chance of success when it came to achieving her objective. But she did have one crucial attribute. She spoke from the heart and was determined to be heard. Help me to have a fraction of that determination when I petition on behalf of others.

Dear brothers and sisters across the Diocese of Sandhurst,

As Australia prepares for the next national Census, I encourage every Catholic to identify their religion by selecting “Catholic” on the Census form.

The Census is more than a record of population. The information gathered helps shape decisions about education, healthcare, community services, infrastructure and government funding. It also assists the Church in understanding the communities we serve and in planning our pastoral mission more effectively.

By identifying as Catholic, you help ensure that the presence, contribution and needs of our Catholic community are accurately represented and taken into account in future planning.

Thank you for taking this simple but important step.

How can I be an active witness of faith in my daily life, lighting the path for others around me?

As we step into August, let's take a moment to reflect on the Pope's heartfelt intention for evangelization in our cities. Together, let's make our cities a beacon of light!
