Today we celebrate the Feast of St Vincent de Paul.

As a young priest, he had his eye on a comfortable life and a successful career. Becoming the St Vincent we know today took time and experience.

What changed him was encounter. When he met people experiencing poverty, he didn't just offer help. He offered relationship, respect and love. He saw something sacred in the person in front of him.

St Vincent wasn't content with charity alone. He wanted structure and reform behind the compassion:

"Deal with the most urgent needs. Organise charity so that it is more efficient... teach reading and writing, educate with the aim of giving each the means of self-support. Intervene with authorities to obtain reforms in structure... there is no charity without justice."

When Frederic Ozanam and his friends founded the St Vincent de Paul Society, they chose St Vincent’ name to honour a priest renowned for his compassion, humility and dedication to the poor.

Adopting his name signalled their commitment to personal service, charity and social justice, following his example of visiting the poor, addressing their immediate needs and promoting dignity and compassion. It's why his name still leads ours today.

In 2026, our work looks very different from Paris in 1833. But the question St Vincent places before us hasn't changed:

How do we encounter the person in front of us with dignity, compassion and love?
