CAREERS WITH THE ADF

BSSC students gathered at lunch time today to hear about the Australian Defence Force (ADF)— one of Australia’s major employers.
CPO Andrew Corbett and Corporal Fletcher Parr explained what ADF had offered them, the extent of the roles within the army, navy and air force, and all the ways to sign up.
Corporal Parr has served in many roles within the ADF and loves the interesting and varied work.
"I love that the defence gives me the opportunity to constantly move and travel.”
CPO Corbett highlighted the many perks, such as free medical and dental, and a range of sporting and leadership opportunities.
"You can apply for a career in the ADF without having an exact role in mind—they will help guide you to get you to a role you might be interested in."
If you couldn't make it to today's session but are interested in a potential career with the army, navy or air force, feel free to reach out to a member of our terrific Careers and Pathways team for more information.

STUDENT PROFILE

As BSSC Year 12 student, AJ Moon, looks towards the future she’s concerned about the apparent lack of consequences for people in power who aren’t empathetic. Despite this, she remains positive about the future.
“There are still plenty of people working to make the world a better place.”
BSSC has done its bit to make AJ’s school-world a great place too. Attending Open Days, she realised BSSC was the only place she could be certain to study both Chemistry—her favourite subject—and Theatre Studies. Her decision to travel from Castlemaine has been rewarded.
“I’m always recommending the college because of our specialist teachers who are so supportive, and classes I enjoy being in. But what I’ve enjoyed most is my agency in my learning—I’m in total control and having this responsibility is setting me up really well for my future life.”
AJ plans to study in the medical field, wanting to do something she enjoys, that truly helps the world.

BSSC PRODUCTION: TICKETS SELLING FAST!

Still Here is a contemporary Australian jukebox musical set in a regional town during a high school reunion, years after five close friends last saw each other. Once inseparable as teenagers, their bond fractured as adulthood pulled them in different directions — career ambition, parenthood, grief, distance, and the realities of staying behind.
Our cast and crew have been putting in an incredible amount of work to make sure it's an amazing show! We would love our school community to support the team and come along to one of the performances.

STUDENTS TALK SCIENCE

Year 12 students, Eloise Cheng and Jayd Wignall, hit the airwaves this morning, talking all-things National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) on the ABC Central Victoria Breakfast Show.
Host, Fiona Parker, interviewed the students—asking about their passion for STEM, their experience at NYSF earlier this year, and the important networks created during the event.
Teacher, Jane Fong, also spoke—encouraging students to apply and outlining the support provided by our local Rotary Clubs and BSSC.
A wonderful experience—thanks to the crew at the radio station for hosting Eloise, Jayd and Jane today.

THAT’S THAT FOR THE G*T

Students studying a Unit 3/4 subject spent much of today sitting the General Achievement Test (G*T).
Split over two sessions, the G*T is conducted under strict exam conditions and gives students the chance to test their general knowledge.
The faces say it all—BSSC students were relieved to complete the test, and gained a lot from this valuable opportunity to practice their exam techniques.
Thank you to our staff and supervisors who made everything run smoothly today!

STRUCTURED WORKPLACE LEARNING: SAMUEL TONKIN

BSSC Year 12 student, Samuel Tonkin, recently completed a week of Work Experience with McGrath Bendigo, where he learned about the importance of professional presentation, strong communication skills, and the ability to build relationships in the real estate industry.
During the placement, Sam had the opportunity to explore this career pathway by observing and assisting with the many activities involved in property sales and management.
Sam accompanied staff on rental inspections, open houses, and property appraisals, gaining first-hand insight into the fast-paced nature of the industry.
He also assisted with practical tasks such as travelling between properties and helping to install "Sold" signs.
While industry regulations meant Sam was unable to communicate directly with clients regarding real estate matters, he learned a great deal by observing experienced agents interact with vendors, buyers, and tenants.
Sam embraced the professional expectations of the role, by being well presented and demonstrating enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
This valuable experience provided Sam with a greater understanding of the real estate profession and the diverse career opportunities available within the industry.
