P2P PROGRAM UNDERWAY

Day 1 of the Practice to Perform (P2P) Program saw 200 BSSC students sit the first session, completing exams under full exam conditions.
Attendees will now receive invaluable feedback on their performance, preparing them exceptionally well for their exams next term.

BSSC AT MURRAY BRIDGE

Over the weekend BSSC’s Competition Vehicles team travelled to Murray Bridge in South Australia to take part in the 24-hour Australian International Pedal Prix.
The college took two vehicles to the event, with 'Dry Weet-Bix' picking up second place and 'Mom's Spaghetti' picking up 15th in its category.
The team will now take part in a few short events before the 24-hour Energy Breakthrough event in Maryborough in November. Well done, BSSC crew!

It was wonderful to see so many students at BSSC for the first day of our holiday revision program—with over 200 students at the English revision lecture alone!
Our students can turn up for any lecture or exam, even without a booking—and all students are provided with a free lunch each day.

WELLBEING WEEK: FRIDAY

The weather couldn’t have been better for the last day of Wellbeing Week, and Term 3, today. Students and staff were treated to some tunes by BSSC alumna, Taylah Chisolm (Class of 2020), whilst they enjoyed a sweet treat, courtesy of Erin’s class.
A very big thanks to the BSSC staff who made this wonderful week possible. It’s been great to see students enjoying the activities and taking some time to focus on their wellbeing, prior to the upcoming exam period.

SENIOR LODDON MALLEE ATHLETICS

The Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) Lions hit the track on Thursday 17th September for the 2026 Loddon Mallee Region Athletics Carnival.

11 athletes represented the school with pride. 8 students in 16 events will now progress to the School Sport Victoria (SSV) State Championships on Friday 16th October at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Kai Norton has qualified for all his events (17yo Boys Javelin, Shot Put, Discus and 100m) along with Chelsea Tickell (17yo Girls 400m, 800m and 1500m), Lincoln Norris (18-20yo Boys 100m & 200m), Kyah Spiteri (17yo Girls 100m, 200m), Bella Noonan (18-20yo Girls Long Jump) and Caitlin O'Brien (16yo Girls Long Jump & Triple Jump).

The 18-20yo Girls and Boys relay teams will look to go back to back as they make the trip to states again. The girls team has Bella Noonan, Caitlin O'Brien, Chelsea Tickell and Kyah Spiteri while the boys team has Jack Bell, Ricky Cunningham, Lincoln Norris and Kai Norton.

A huge thank you to Marc Lewon, Ameliah Brown, Kira Collins, Maya Dorrington, Louis Eddy, Noah Gillett, Addison Magro-Limmer, Rhylee Po***ck, Harry Purcell, Cameron Ralph, Emily Tognolini, Kylah Virtue and Poppy Wainwright for assisting LMR with the events.

WHEN GAMING MEETS GAMBLING

Who knew?
Our various tech devices and platforms—such as social media and all forms of online gaming—are so often thought of as useful, fun, or even essential.
However, as Jo from Bendigo’s Anglicare told BSSC Year 11 students today, our devices are designed to be addictive.
The link between gaming and gambling is not complex. Anything that makes you want to ‘just keep going’ or distracts you from real life and the things you know will make your life better—things like sleep—can be described as an addiction.
Gaming designers and gambling-game designers know the research: our brains love a nice hit of dopamine—one of the ‘feel good’ chemicals our brains release each time something happens we think is good.
Achieving a new level in a game will be accompanied by a dopamine hit.
But like all drugs, you soon need more and more to get the same ‘hit’.
Groups like Anglicare uncover the whole other side of gaming and gambling—equally well-researched—that gives the terrible truth about too-much gaming or too-much gambling.
$31.18 billion dollars were lost by the world’s biggest gamblers—Australians—last year.
$7.39 billion dollars of that were lost by Victorians.
(Compare this to the new footy stadium for Hobart which is expected to cost $1.13 billion.)
But there is good news for BSSC students. Young people’s brains are capable of recovering really well from addictions. Old people—much harder. But young people willing to admit that it’s not normal or healthy to stay up all night gaming or gambling, can still look forward to correcting the imbalances addiction to games or gambling brings.

STUDENTS EXPLORE KOOYOORA STATE PARK

This week the NETschool and BSSC Community Services students had the privilege of visiting Kooyoora State Park with Djaara guide from Dumawul, Kerri Douglas, who ‘Welcomed us’ onto Country and then led us along the track to the Southern Lookout.
Along the way, we paused to observe ancient rock wells, strategically positioned to collect water, learn about native plants, see a smoke signal tree and take in the beautiful views across Kooyoora, while Bunjil - the Djaara Creation Spirit, circled above.
Kerri shared her personal connection to culture and Country and spoke about totems, kinship structures and the importance of maintaining cultural knowledge.
We also learned about impacts of colonisation and the gold rush for Djaara people, including the establishment of the Christian protectorate at Franklinford, which was intended to provide a place of safety from colonial violence.
Franklinford Protectorate came with conditions that imposed European values on those seeking safety while forbidding the practice of Aboriginal culture, language, and spirituality.
During this time Aboriginal people were required to work in exchange for rations rather than wages. Kerri and Eboni (BSSC First Nations Program Coordinator) also explained the difference between ‘Native Title’ rights and the ‘Recognition of Settlement Agreement’ rights.
These conversations provided an excellent segue into our students' upcoming study units, ‘Work with Diverse People’ and ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety’.
The day certainly helped connect classroom learning with Country, culture and lived experience.

WELLBEING WEEK: THURSDAY

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as students—and staff—packed a plaza filled with bubbles for the utterly captivating magic and juggling show brought by The Amazing Mister Mike and his son, Ruben.
Students volunteered for a number of acts, including a remarkable demonstration of ‘magical’ prediction and being asked to use a staple gun on the host—again a great trick (thankfully!).
Rueben juggled coloured balls, fruit, sharp objects, a rabbit trap and then in a finale, fire sticks. What a fabulous way to get the serotonin pumping as these consummate entertainers wowed the crowd.
