2021 has been a year to celebrate, despite it being one of the hardest years we've ever faced.

Thank you to the Department of Education & Training, Victoria, schools, communities, industries and employers who have partnered with LLENs (over this year and the past 20 years), helping us help young people on their journey from school to work.

New youth-led research released today shows that work experience is vital for getting your first job, but employers say it can be a range of things (volunteering, sport...). COVID-19 has dramatically impacted on all the ways young people can get work experience, including school placements and community activity. The good news is the report shows communities can provide alternatives through projects (like this research) where young people solve community challenges.

"Many of the growing industries are actually experiencing skill shortages: not only are young people keen and willing to work these jobs, but they are actually out there!"

Last week, we had the privilege of hearing from Julia Sandeman, a Research Intern from the How Work Works project. Julia featured at the Goldfields Local Learning and Employment Network(GLLEN) AGM discussing some exciting finding from the research.

How Work Works was a partnership between North Central LLEN Campaspe Cohuna LLEN, Goldfields Local Learning and Employment Network(GLLEN) and Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network. The research was prepared by Jeanette Pope, who supported 9 young interns to interview 26 employers and survey 258 young people.

In the past two weeks, 374 Grade 5/6 students in our region have gone on 60 separate careers excursions as part of our Passions & Pathways program. Over 30 businesses opened their doors to inspire students with tours, conversations and hands-on activities. During their excursions just some examples included students:

• Stepping into the driver’s seat of big machinery at Delecca’s
• Operating the Monash University Rural Health School’s state of the art medical mannequins
• Touring ‘behind the scenes’ at the Bendigo Art Gallery
• Experimenting with brick laying techniques with Lansell Homes
• Watching robots at Hofmann Engineering
• Learning how olive oil is produced at Bridgeward Grove Estate
• Splitting 200 million year old stone with Yarrabee and Castlemaine Stone
• Watching corn be turned into corn chips at Sonora Foods
• Exploring how bowls and cups are created at Bendigo Pottery
• Investigating germs under blue light with Maryborough District Health Services.

The result has been students excited about their futures. Students who can link what they’re learning at school with the real world to motivate them in their schooling. Recent research across OECD countries shows careers experiences in primary school lead to better adult outcomes (higher employment, wages, satisfaction). That’s what Passion & Pathways hopes for every young person in our region.

What do you get when employers across Bendigo open their doors for the day to over 250 students from year 5/6?

A super fun day and a bunch of students excited about their futures!

Today students learned about skills in engineering, science and technology, health, manufacturing, education, trade, retail, horticulture, construction, horticulture, and the Arts, and whilst it was wet outside, nothing dampened their enthusiasm for learning or asking great questions!

Huge thanks to everyone involved.

Did you know that our Young Industry Ambassadors receive training in public speaking, leadership and engagement skills?

Not only are students being empowered, but our team of young YIAs as well.

We’re helping young people across an array of different industries feel supported and strongly connected into our team of YIAs. By doing so, we encourage their personal growth as young leaders.

Do you know a professional and inspiring young person who could pass on their skills to school-aged children?

One of the ways we inspire young people in schools about opportunities to flourish in the workspace is through our Young Industry Ambassador program.

Young Industry Ambassadors give young people aged 18-30 a platform to inspire school students about future industry opportunities by sharing their stories and pathways during and post-school.

YIA's present in front of classrooms and assemblies and even host experiences in their workplaces.

By opening up a space for young people to share their passions, a typical day at their workplace, what they enjoy about it and their lifestyle, we’re shaping a community of leaders that feel empowered in personal growth, mentoring, and networking.

Have you got someone in mind that would be perfect for this?

The world of work is getting increasingly more competitive for young people to enter. 😯

We know that many young people have put in hard work, handing in their resumes and trying their best to score a job interview. Even though there are so many jobs out there for young people right now, it can be difficult to link employment opportunities and people in need.

That’s where Goldfields LLEN comes in.

It's time to break down the walls and challenges of finding employment to set young people on the pathway they want to pursue.

The Goldfields LLEN offers industry experience to build solid networks in the workforce. We create everything from hands-on placements and work experience to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

In doing so, we remind young people that missing out on one job isn't what defines you. 👍

Goldfields LLEN builds the bridge between young people and the opportunities because everyone deserves a positive future.

The Youth are Taking Over! 😍

We’re celebrating the initiative shown by the young people involved in our Youth Take Over program.

The interns displayed their artworks and marketing campaign for Red Edge’s new wine Label at the Rood Henry’s Art Space in Heathcote. From the set design to the video projection, the crew did it all themselves.

It has been incredible to see the young people flourish under the guidance of Kira Hyde from The KH Studio.

Youth Take Over gives young people 17-25 the chance to upskill through facilitated work experience programs.

Goldfields LLEN is all about paving the way forward so young people can enter the labour market. The interns from the program are leaving with work-ready skills, references for their CV, and new professional networks.

A round of applause to this year’s PFAD Team! 👏

We are so excited to bring you highlights from our last round of the 2022 participants!

👉 We’d like to thank Andrew Schaeche at White Hills Primary School and Kira Hyde from The KH Studio. It was fantastic to hear your highlights of supporting students at the Fun Run event and engaging in classroom activities.

👉 What a pleasure it was partnering with Danielle Derkson, principal of Eaglehawk Secondary School and Sue Mills from the Fosterville Gold Mine. How wonderful it was listening to Sue speak to a group of female students from the STEAM program about her journey into a mostly male dominated industry.

👉 And finally a big thank you to Travis Eddy from Kennington Primary School and Sonia Di Mezza from the Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services. What an excellent day visiting all the special programs that are catered for the students.

We’re super excited to hear from Kate Mannix about her Principal for a Day experience! 😄

Sharing the day with Simon Wood, the principal of Crusoe College, Kate was very impressed with the breadth of programs and opportunities open to the students and how passionate the staff are in being student-focused.

We’d like to say a BIG thank you to Simon for welcoming her on board and sharing his knowledge and experience in being a leader within the education industry.

PFAD opens up amazing opportunities for principals and industry leaders to connect locally and collaborate in the future.

Thank you both Kate and Simon for your support in this year’s program! 🙌
