Week 4- Our focus was fire safety with a visit from the local Watsons Creek Fire Truck and local RFS members Brett, Connie and Steve. They talked to the children about ways to stay safe when there is a house fire or bushfire, before moving to talk about their fire safety clothing and gear. The highlight as always was a climb in the fire truck and chance to spray the hose.

Week 3- Our focus this week was on shapes. We learnt what they look like and their names. We practiced drawing shapes and looked for shapes in our everyday environment. A circle clock, a rectangle table, a square window….

Week 2- Term 3
Following the children’s interest in fishing and discussion about the beach we focused on ocean and water animals. We created an arctic ice scene for our penguins and polar bears, and created turtle nests. We avoided sharks and crocodiles in a bridge crossing game and made jelly fish and octopus in art and craft.
Outdoors we paddled in tub boats and used rods to catch fish. The kids also had the chance try to fish and chips and made pumpkin soup with Miss Leah.

Week 11- NAIDOC week.
We were visited by local Retreat and Gamilaroi elder Bill Trewlyn. This visit, he chose to share with the children his knowledge of Aboriginal music through use of clapping sticks and three of his didgeridoo’s. The children learnt about clapping sticks being used in dance and the sounds of the didgeridoo used to teach knowledge of their culture through sounds, music , stories and songs. Bill also shared a story he wrote himself called ‘Bulabar Dreaming’
We also enjoyed art and craft in the form of clay models, weaving and bark painting.

Week 10- We spent time exploring nature. The highlight was a bushwalk into the nearby crown reserve. We saw cows, sheep and horses as well as tracks and poo from kangaroo and rabbits. We saw a rusty car and dam and stopped for a quick snack before returning to Preschool. The kids also enjoyed a wander across the road to locals Karen and Nick Roudenko who let us watch as they rang a bell to a gathering swarm of lorikeets that came to eat the feed they spread. It is always nice to find times to interact with our community.

Week 9- Following up on the group interest in building we decided to focus on construction.
How did we do this?
- We discussed all the tradespeople involved in building a house from the architect to the builder , carpenter, electrician, roofer and painter.
- We made our own mud mortar and built a wall
- We talked about big builds like ‘the Great Wall of China’ and worked together to build our own wall from one side of the yard to the other
- We created box cubbies
- We created a work zone with wooden planks, pvc pipes and trucks in the dirt patch.

Week 8- our focus was music. Learning the names of instruments and exploring the sounds they make. We also explored concepts like fast/slow and soft/loud. We played instruments to music and made our own music with our bodies ( body percussion ) by clapping, stamping, clicking, and using our mouth to make sounds. Miss Leah’s instrument tree looked fantastic and the kids had a great time striking the instruments to make sounds .

Week 7- Bodies
Our focus was bodies, body safety and consent. We labelled our body parts using the correct terminology, and talked about keeping a bubble of space around ourselves. We discussed asking for permission before we come into someone’s personal space, using the phrase ‘my body belongs to me.’
This was all supported through a visit to Healthy Harold, completing a session on body boundaries.
Other highlights:

🌼Making cheese and spinach triangles using spinach from the garden.
