Today it begins. To every Year 12 on the Northern Beaches and North Shore sitting English Paper 1 this morning: you've done the work. Trust it.

Read each question twice. Plan before you write. If one question goes badly, leave it and keep moving. Marks come from the whole paper, not one answer.

To our BTA students, and to the parents who did the lesson runs, the snacks and the late-night pep talks all year, we're proud of you.

The HSC runs until Thursday 5 November, and we're here for every subject still to come.

Save this one. Here's everything to check before each HSC exam.

• Timetable checked. The start time on the timetable is when reading time begins, so arrive well before it
• Black pens, plus spares
• Pencil, eraser, ruler and highlighter where the subject needs them
• A NESA-approved calculator for Maths and science exams
• Water in a clear bottle with the label removed
• Phone and smartwatch switched off and left outside the exam room
• A proper breakfast and a buffer for traffic and parking

NESA's full exam rules are on its website, and worth a two-minute read with your Year 12 tonight.

The most underrated HSC study technique happens with the lights off.

Sleep is when the brain locks in what it learned that day. Late nights trade tomorrow's recall for an extra hour of tired re-reading, and it's a bad trade in exam week.

A few things parents can quietly help with:

• Agree on a screens-down time and put the phone charger outside the bedroom
• Shift the wake-up time this week to match their exam start times, so exam morning isn't a shock
• Protect family dinner as a proper break

Rested students think faster and panic less. That's worth more than one more late night.

If worry about a subject is what's keeping them awake, a one-on-one lesson can take the weight off.

Public holiday today, and eight days until English Paper 1. It's a good day for one full practice exam at home.

Real exam conditions show what practising in sections can't: stamina, time pressure, and which questions quietly eat the clock.

Set it up properly:
• Phone in another room
• A clock they can see, with the real time limit including reading time
• Only what's allowed in the exam room on the table
• No stopping to check notes

Afterwards, mark it together against NESA's marking guidelines. Or bring it to a lesson this week and a BTA tutor will go through it with them, question by question.

Year 12s are experts at saying "I'm fine". Here's what to watch for in the final fortnight.

1. One subject keeps getting pushed to "tomorrow"
2. Long nights at the desk, but little to show for them
3. Revision means re-reading, never practice questions
4. Stress spikes around one topic, not the whole HSC
5. Marked assessments keep losing marks in the same place

None of these mean something is wrong. They usually mean one specific gap that is easier to close with someone beside them than alone.

A one-on-one lesson with an experienced HSC tutor can target exactly that gap before exams start.

You don't need a full term of tutoring to make a difference before the HSC. Sometimes one focused lesson is enough.

Most Year 12s aren't lost across a whole subject. They're stuck on something specific: a Maths topic that never clicked, an essay that falls apart under time, a module they've been quietly avoiding.

That's what a one-off lesson is for. Bring the past paper, the marked essay or the question that keeps going wrong, and an experienced HSC tutor works through it one-on-one.

60 or 90 minutes. In-centre at Belrose, Brookvale, Forestville, Mona Vale or Gordon, online, or at home. No lock-in contracts.

Highlighting the same notes for the fifth time feels productive. It isn't the same as doing what the HSC will actually ask.

Answering questions from memory builds recall that holds up under exam pressure. Past papers add the real question style and the real time limit, which is where most marks slip.

NESA publishes past HSC papers and marking guidelines for free. A simple routine:

• Start with a paper
• Do one section at a time, timed
• Mark it against the guidelines
• Spend more time on what lost marks than on what went well

Our tutors work through past papers one-on-one, spotting exactly where the marks are going and fixing it before exam day.
