In traditional Cook Island culture, a boy becomes a man and potentially a warrior upon his first hair cutting. Tribes at war in ancient times would kill all the males in a rival tribe during war raids on advesary islands & villages. Because of this tradition, young boys with long hair were spared during sorties, but once their hair was cut, no matter the age, it was expected that the warriors wield a spear and fight for the survival of their people against such marauders. In this album, in modern times, young Bronson is inducted into the ways and heavily weighted values required of him to ensure the survival of his family, and ultimately his ancestors and very heritage.
