Component 01 of 6: Dribbling.

It’s not just about beating a player — it’s precision, timing and the judgement to know when to accelerate, decelerate, or change direction. This is where Ball Mastery starts.

Ball Mastery isn’t about tricks for the sake of tricks.

It’s about building the confidence and competence to control the ball in any situation — under pressure, in tight areas, all of it. That’s the foundation everything else in my book is built on.

That quiet moment between setting up and the players arriving. ⚽️🌅

Balls out, nets up, sun coming through — just me and the pitch for a few minutes before Saturday morning training kicks off. Perth Glory Academy, based right here at Lark Hill Sporting Complex.

Grateful for mornings like this. Not a bad way to start the day.

Remember when you’d grab your bike, a ball, and just… disappear until the streetlights came on? 🚲⚽

No coach. No cones. No structure. Just hours of trial, error, and pure joy with the ball at your feet.

That’s how so many of the game’s best players were made — not in academies, but on the street.

Today’s kids don’t get that same freedom. Screens have replaced footpaths. Structured sessions have replaced spontaneous ones. And with it, we’re losing something — the natural repetition, risk-taking, and creativity that shaped generations of footballers.

This is exactly why Ball Mastery matters so much in modern coaching. It’s not just a drill — it’s a way of artificially recreating those street football moments. Hundreds of touches. Freedom to fail. Space to invent.

In my book Ball Mastery: The Foundations of Football Excellence, I dig into how coaches can bring that joy back — structured pathway, unstructured spirit.

“What if I’d said no?”

A player once ran up to me mid-game and asked if he could try a rainbow flick over the fullback.

I said: “Yes. Go for it.”

Seconds later he flicked it over, cut inside, and curled it into the top corner. One of the best goals I’ve ever seen from a young player.

If I’d said no — that goal never happens. Worse, his confidence to take risks takes a hit that lasts a lot longer than one game.

This is the heart of Ball Mastery: technical skill built through repetition, but only unlocked when players are given the freedom to fail, experiment, and create.

My book, Ball Mastery, breaks down exactly how to build that environment — from the core technical components to structuring warm-ups, progressions, and free play into your sessions.
