Daari Gumburr Cultural Camp 2026 πΏ
From 26β28 August, seven of our Bellingen students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Daari Gumburr Cultural Camp at Scotts Head, sharing three very special days with students from Frank Partridge VC PS, St Maryβs Bellingen, St Maryβs Bowraville, Macksville Public School, Urunga Public School, Repton Public School and Raleigh Public School.
The camp was packed with opportunities to connect with culture, Country and one another. Students listened to important cultural and local stories, and enjoyed walks along the beach and Scotts Head headland. There were plenty of laughs and friendly competition along the way too, including beach activities and sandcastle building.
Across the three days, students took part in an incredible variety of workshops and experiences such as dance and song, bush tucker and bush medicine, fishing, weaving, nature dyeing and shirt making, jewellery making with traditional materials, art workshops painting lip balm containers and Fatherβs Day gifts, Indigenous games and clap-stick making. There was also time for volleyball, handball, table tennis and simply enjoying being together making new friends.
Some particularly special moments came around the fire, sharing stories, enjoying meals (including some delicious Johnny cakes!), preparing for the final dance performance, and finishing Thursday with a formal dinner with a photoshoot.
More than anything, the camp was about connection! Connecting to culture and Country, learning from Elders, mentors and community, trying new things, and building strong friendships with students from schools across the area. β€οΈππ€
A huge and heartfelt thank you to Uncle Ricky, Aunty Lisa, Nikki, and all of the mentors, teachers, cooks, facilitators, volunteers and everyone involved in organising and supporting the Daari Gumburr Camp. The time, knowledge, stories and care you shared with our students made these three days an experience they will remember for a long time.
What a wonderful few days of culture, learning, friendship and connection. πΏπ€πβ€οΈ
