Bellingen Koalas in Crisis -

Bellingen Koalas in Crisis - Koala now Endangered. # Scientists believe Orangutans could be extinct by 2023.

Bellingen Koalas in Crisis includes Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Kalang and Nambucca Heads which contains the largest wild Koala colony Nationally and Internationally. According to the Australian koala foundation there could be as few as 43, 000 koalas left in the wild in all of Australia! In fact, so little is known about the Koala population within NSW that population estimates range from 1,000 to

10, 000 animals. For comparison: A well known endangered animal- the Oranguatan- has wild population estimates ranging from 30, 000 to 15, 000. This highlights the URGENT need for more studies into Koalas! While no concrete figure is actually known for koala populations, and with the evidence pointing to severe decline, Forests NSW has continued to clearfell native forests in areas known to provide high value habitat to these endangered animals- such as Pine Creek State Forest

What is occuring right now at Ellis Forest has caused alarm because the Environmental Protection Agency is yet again not behaving independently in coming up with their "No Wrongdoing at Ellis forest" Independent Assessors will now go in and check the measurements. This area was so badly hit during the Black Summer Fires and the Public has never been given the courtesy of being informed of the outcome of an investigation by the Natural Resources Commission about Logging burnt or "Recovering" Forests. The Leaked report kept secret by the NSW Government clearly stated NOT to log "Recovering" Forests. One does not need to measure these trees within a milometre of a measurement to know that they are very old and precious trees. This issue is about our Endangered Koalas who are hurtling towards Extinction. # #

Can you join the Bellingen Environment Centre, the Kalang River Forest Alliance other Environment Groups and concerned people at a rally to preserve what remains of a Prime Koala Hub where some Old Growth has been cut down and many other trees damaged. We must preserve Native Forest Habitat to save Koalas in the wild. Join us outside the Forestry Corporation NSW Coffs Building at 30 Park Street at 11am. We demand the EPA call for a Stop Work Order until proper investigations of this forest can be made.

Join forest Protectors calling for an immediate stop work order in Ellis SF nw of Dorrigo. Koalas and Gliders homes are being destroyed. Ancient tall hollow bearing trees are being decimated. Meet in Bellingen at the Swiss Patisserie 10 am to Car pool.

It is criminial that the NSW Government is backing its puppet Forestry Corporation NSW in trashing Prime Koala Habitat and Old Growth Trees and that Multiple breaches have been found at Ellis Forest, Clouds Creek and Wild Cattle Creek over the past month. This is just another example of a deeply corrupted system of harvesting at a time when every stick of Native Forest is precious if we are to halt the extinction of Koalas and other precious species like the Sugar Glider and most recently added to the Endangered list our Black Cockatoo.
