Our St John’s Grammar Junior and Secondary flute soloists and ensemble players put in a dominant performance at the annual Adelaide Eisteddfod recently, bringing home a swag of prizes!

Our talented team travelled to Unley Park Baptist Church and represented our School with pride:

> Secondary Ensemble – 1st Prize, Primary and Secondary Ensemble
> Junior Ensemble (Flutissimo) – 2nd Prize, Primary and Secondary Ensemble
> Danni – 1st Prize, Piccolo Solo Open; 1st Prize, Grade 5 and Above Study; 2nd Prize, Grade 6 Solo; Honourable Mention, Australian Composition Open
> Danni and Olivia – 1st Prize, Primary and Secondary Duet
> Jackie – 2nd Prize, Grade 2 Solo
> Olivia – 3rd Prize, Grade 6 Solo
> Isabelle and Mia – Honourable Mention, Primary and Secondary Duet

Danni also received the Music Teachers’ Association Inc. ‘Grace Barbara Turner Award for Excellence in Performance – Wind’ award for her performances.

The Adelaide Eisteddfod is always a valuable and enriching experience – an excellent platform for our musicians to showcase their skills and receive positive feedback.

A huge thank you to our hard-working Music staff and congratulations to our flautists on their exceptional presentation, confident performance etiquette and thoroughly prepared repertoire – well played!

Do ogres know how to dance? Our talented choreographer Carla Papa-Centofanti is doing her best to make it happen, as ‘Shrek the Musical’ rehearsals hit fever pitch ahead of next week’s performances!

Carla really knows how to put a show together, having worked with the likes of Ruel, Rhonda Burchmore, David Campbell and Deni Hines over the years. Getting a donkey to dance should be easy!

‘Shrek the Musical’ will run for four shows at the John Bray Centre for Performing Arts, September 15–18 (next week!).

Get your dancing shoes on!

Last week at St John’s Grammar we celebrated our wonderful dads with a ‘Dads and Donuts’ breakfast at the ELC on Thursday, and a Father’s Day Stall at the Junior School on Friday!

Our ELC dads got the day underway with a hot coffee and some delicious biscuits and donuts, then got down to floor-level for some good old-fashioned play time with the kids, reading books, doing jigsaws, squishing playdough and playing board games.

Steady, reliable, kind, sporty, funny, musical, smart, indoorsy, outdoorsy – whatever kind of dad you are, we hope you had a terrific Father’s Day!

On Sunday, St John’s Grammar Junior and Secondary teams competed in the annual Tournament of Minds – a nationwide problem-solving school challenge across the Arts, STEM, Language and Literature and Social Sciences.

Our Junior Arts team worked together to develop some truly creative concepts, which they transformed into an engaging play. They didn’t bring home the win, but their commitment, teamwork, resilience and enthusiasm were outstanding!

In the hotly contested Secondary comp, our Social Sciences and Arts teams each gave it 110%. Our egg-cellent Arts team ‘The Good Eggs’ won their division and have been invited to the International Finals in Darwin later this year!

Congratulations to all of our TOM competitors, dedicated support staff and parents on another brilliant year of collaboration and creativity – we are so proud of your efforts!

‘Shrek the Musical’ rehearsals are in full swing at St John’s Grammar – the ogre excitement is building!

Ahead of the production, our four main players – Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Lord Farquaad – took time-out to share their thoughts on the things they’re enjoying most about being in a musical at St John’s Grammar.

‘Shrek’ will run for four swampy shows at the John Bray Centre for Performing Arts, 15–18 September – we can’t wait!

On Friday last week we hosted a busy lunchtime stall for Wear it Purple Day, an annual awareness day celebrating and empowering LGBTQIA+ youth.

This year’s theme – ‘Colours of Courage’ – was reflected in the rainbow of colourful snacks and giveaways on offer, as the lunch crowd gathered around.

Our stall raised $723 for Minus18, a charity that aspires to create an Australia where all young people are safe, empowered and supported.

Wear it Purple Day is an important opportunity for St John’s Grammar to demonstrate our commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all students, staff and families.

And that’s a wrap for Book Week 2026 at St John’s Grammar – a true ‘Symphony of Stories’!

We capped off our annual celebrations with our colourful Junior School Book Week Parade on Friday, which drew a huge crowd of parents and book-fans in the morning sunshine.

Earlier in the week, 156 Secondary Campus students decamped to Blackwood Library for our 7th annual ‘Write a Book in a Day’ extravaganza – an intensely creative 12-hour session in which teams conceive, write, edit, illustrate and format a whole book, with plenty of snacks to keep them going.

This year our bookish teams raised more than $12,000 for the Kids’ Cancer Project, with our finished books headed for children’s hospitals around Australia.

Back at the Secondary Campus we hosted an IQ-testing ‘Book Week Quiz’ in the Library, and our annual Book Week Assembly, featuring a poetry recital, interview with in-house author Neil MacKenzie, a teaser performance from our upcoming production of ‘Shrek The Musical’, and teachers (almost) outclassing our students with their excellent costumes!

Book Week at St John’s Grammar goes far beyond words on a page – it’s a wonderfully collaborative, whole-school affair, celebrating our shared passion for literature, stories and creativity.

From 7–9 August, a creative troupe of St John’s Grammar Media Studies students took part in the Adelaide 48 Hour Film Project, writing, shooting, editing and scoring a movie in just 48 hours!

As with all film shoots, there were some challenges (a broken thumb; a lead actor who lost her voice) – but the team worked incredibly hard, incorporating a mandatory prop (garden gnome), character (librarian Paige/Paul Turner) and line of dialogue (“All I want is another chance!”) into their high-tension production, ‘The House Of Danger’.

On Friday 21 August, Lauren, Rose, Harriett, Liam and Oliver went along to their screening at the Mercury Cinema, where 73 rival films debuted across last week.

Will they be shortlisted and progress to the Piccadilly Cinema finals on 12 September? Watch this space, dear viewers…

On Friday night at the John Bray Centre for Performing Arts, we presented our 2026 Year 12 Music Showcase – a celebration of talent, musical inspiration and commitment!

Amelie, Evie, Maya, Char and Lucy performed a range of songs and compositions – from classics like ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘Misty’ to a moving cello rendition of ‘Sicilienne’ – demonstrating a level of musical understanding and mastery far beyond their years.

Congratulations to our gifted performers and Music staff on this magical evening of music, reflecting the St John’s Grammar passion for music and our culture of care and support. Bravo!

Last week across two action-packed afternoons, St John’s Grammar took on Pulteney Grammar School in the annual Winter Intercol secondary sports extravaganza!

Our boys’ and girls’ soccer, football and basketball and girls’ netball teams battled it out across an incredibly even competition, results often decided by the narrowest of margins – and as the floodlights blazed across the muddy Adelaide Parklands on Thursday night, Pulteney edged ahead to claim this year’s shield 4–3.

Congratulations to players, coaches and fans from both schools on a fierce-but-friendly event – it was wonderful to see so much skill and school pride on display.

We look forward to the competition returning in 2027 and working hard to win back the shield!
